Spain Won't Try To Finish 2nd To Avoid Brazil In Quarters

Nov 30, 2022 3:10 PM

Luis Enrique said Spain will not try to manufacture a tie against Japan to try to avoid placing Brazil in the quarterfinals.

“We have reflected on it,” Luis Enrique said, “but from a professional point of view, imagine that we speculate. ‘OK, we want to be second, that’s in our interests.’ We get to the 95th minute and in both games it’s 0-0, 0-0, [thinking:] ‘Everything’s going great.’ And then Costa Rica go and score and Japan score. And in 15 seconds you’re out because you have been speculating for 90 minutes. Or the other way round: Germany are winning 5-0 and we’re drawing and that will do and then Japan score and you’re out.

“When you’re a very good team and you want to play seven games, you want to be first. We play the team that’s second in Group F, right? And then in the quarter-final … in theory it’s Brazil. OK, great. We play Brazil then. We can’t count like the milkmaid.”

Cristiano Ronaldo Offered $360M Contract By Al-Nassr

Nov 30, 2022 3:05 PM

Cristiano Ronaldo has been offered a three-and-a-half year contract by Al-Nassr in Saudi Arabia worth more than $119 million per year.

As part of the deal, Al-Nassr would be willing to compensate Ronaldo for the $19 million that he would have earned for the remainder of the season with Manchester United.

Saudi Arabia, meanwhile, are hopeful that Ronaldo's presence in their domestic league would help a bid to host the 2030 World Cup and would be keen for the former Real Madrid and Juventus forward to work as an ambassador for the country.

Ronaldo remains open to the possibility of remaining in Europe this season.

Qatari Official Estimates Between 400-500 Worker Deaths

Nov 29, 2022 10:42 AM

A Qatari official has admitted that the number of worker deaths related to the tournament is "between 400 and 500" compared to the official tally previously offered of three.

In the interview, portions of which Piers Morgan posted online, the journalist asked Al-Thawadi: "What is the honest, realistic total do you think of migrant workers who died from -- as a result of work they're doing for the World Cup in totality?"

"The estimate is around 400, between 400 and 500," Al-Thawadi responded. "I don't have the exact number. That's something that's been discussed."

The comment threatened to renew criticism by human rights groups over the toll of hosting the Middle East's first World Cup given the migrant workers who built more than $200 billion worth of stadiums, metro lines and infrastructure needed for the tournament.

Lionel Messi Hasn't Agreed To Deal With Inter Miami

Nov 28, 2022 11:17 AM

Lionel Messi has not yet agreed to a deal with Inter Miami despite reports a deal is close.

Messi has previously said he would like to play in Major League Soccer, but the forward has decided not to think about his future until the new year and has opted to focus on the World Cup.

Messi and his family own a house in Miami.

Messi's current contract with Paris Saint-Germain expires in June.

PSG are hoping to convince Messi to stay at the Parc des Princes for at least another season, particularly if they can offer him a competitive team with the potential to win the Champions League.

Gregg Berhalter: We're Chipping Away At Improving USMNT Reputation

Nov 26, 2022 10:45 AM

The United States were impressive in their 0-0 tie against England during their second match of the World Cup group stage. A win against Iran is needed for the United States to advance to the knockout stage.

“We’re chipping away at it,” manager Gregg Berhalter said about changing global perceptions about the team. “You need games like tonight to be able to do that. Otherwise it’s hard for people to get an assessment of it. We’re not done. Our focus is to keep going, and hopefully by the end of the tournament we give people something to talk about.”

“I think we’re not really afraid of playing against top tier teams, and I think it works in our favor if people think that we’re underdogs going into games because then they might take us lightly or something,” Weston McKennie said. “I think we surprise them every time.”

Glazers Announce They're Willing To Sell Manchester United

Nov 22, 2022 9:36 PM

The Glazer family have announced they are open to selling Manchester United.

United issued a statement on Tuesday to reveal they are "exploring strategic alternatives," including new investment or a full sale. The Glazers completed their takeover in 2005.

The statement released Tuesday read: "Manchester United announces today that the board is commencing a process to explore strategic alternatives for the club.

"The process is designed to enhance the club's future growth, with the ultimate goal of positioning the club to capitalize on opportunities both on the pitch and commercially.

"As part of this process, the board will consider all strategic alternatives, including new investment into the club, a sale, or other transactions involving the company.

"This will include an assessment of several initiatives to strengthen the club, including stadium and infrastructure redevelopment, and expansion of the club's commercial operations on a global scale, each in the context of enhancing the long-term success of the club's men's, women's and academy teams, and bringing benefits to fans and other stakeholders."

The news comes on the same day that Manchester United announced that Cristiano Ronaldo would leave the club after a "mutual agreement" was reached by the two parties.

Cristiano Ronaldo, United Mutually Agree To Terminate Contract

Nov 22, 2022 9:30 PM

Cristiano Ronaldo and Manchester United have mutually agreed to terminate his contract.

Ronaldo's interview with Piers Morgan last week made the possibility of him continuing with the club after the World Cup completely untenable for any of the stakeholders.

A statement issued by the club on Tuesday read: "Cristiano Ronaldo is to leave Manchester United by mutual agreement, with immediate effect.

"The club thanks him for his immense contribution across two spells at Old Trafford, scoring 145 goals in 346 appearances, and wishes him and his family well for the future.

"Everyone at Manchester United remains focused on continuing the team's progress under Erik ten Hag and working together to deliver success on the pitch."

United will not have to pay Ronaldo to leave the club.

In a simultaneous statement, Ronaldo, who rejoined United from Juventus in 2021, said it was "time for a new challenge." He said: "Following conversations with Manchester United we have mutually agreed to end our contract early.

"I love Manchester United and I love the fans, that will never ever change. However, it feels like the right time for me to seek a new challenge.

"I wish the team every success for the remainder of the season and for the future."
