Liverpool are preparing to begin formal discussions with Andoni Iraola this week as the club seeks a replacement for Arne Slot, who was dismissed Saturday after a troubled season that produced 20 defeats across all competitions and a fifth-place Premier League finish, sources told ESPN.
The club's decision to part with Slot was described as reluctant given his 2024-25 Premier League title triumph, his first season after replacing Jurgen Klopp. Liverpool are now seeking a more aggressive, attacking style of play.
Iraola, 43, is the leading candidate on a short list that also includes Stuttgart manager Sebastian Hoeness. Liverpool are targeting a new head coach before the World Cup opens June 11, giving Slot's successor maximum time to work with the squad and contribute to offseason planning.
The Spaniard is available after three productive seasons at Bournemouth, where he was hired by Liverpool sporting director Richard Hughes. Iraola guided the Cherries to a top-six Premier League finish last season, earning European qualification for the first time in the club's history.
Hughes had previously been impressed by Iraola's work at Rayo Vallecano, a factor that strengthens the connection between the two men ahead of formal talks.
Iraola's salary demands are not expected to present an obstacle. His reported asking price of £10 million ($13.4 million) per year was beyond Bournemouth's reach but aligns closely with what Slot earned at Anfield, sources told ESPN.
