Bukayo Saka Out With Groin Injury, Martin Odegaard Tactically Benched

Jan 31, 2026 10:45 AM

Arsenal forward Bukayo Saka suffered a groin injury during warmups before Saturday's Premier League match at Leeds United and was replaced in the starting XI by Noni Madueke. Manager Mikel Arteta also made the surprising tactical decision to bench captain Martin Odegaard in favor of Kai Havertz.

Saka appeared to be holding his groin as he limped off the pitch prior to kickoff. The injury represents a significant blow to Arsenal as they aim to build on their four-point lead at the top of the table.

Sources told ESPN there is no injury concern for Odegaard, confirming the decision to drop the captain is purely tactical. Havertz earned his first Premier League start since February 2, 2025, after impressing against Kairat in Champions League action on Wednesday following a lengthy injury layoff.

Arteta reinstated Viktor Gyokeres to his starting striker role in place of Gabriel Jesus. The midfield selection provided the biggest tactical surprise with Havertz starting alongside Declan Rice and Martin Zubimendi. Odegaard and summer signing Eberechi Eze begin the match on the bench.

The Arsenal manager defended Odegaard's statistical output during his Friday news conference. The Norwegian midfielder has scored just one goal in 24 appearances across all competitions in 2025-26.

"Those are the numbers but we have to give the full numbers as well," Arteta said. "He's played much less minutes than in any other season as well because he's been injured three times, that's the reality. We want to improve that, for sure, we want him to affect the game in the area where we can win football matches. But you know Martin and how he works every single day, I have no doubt that that will come."

Arteta addressed questions about Odegaard's tendency to drop deep in possession. The manager acknowledged the stylistic differences between his tactical preferences and his captain's natural instincts.

"It's a bit of his nature, and my nature is to go to the opposite side," Arteta replied. "But we need to respect as well the qualities and the talent of players, and within that, they need to feel the freedom in attack, especially to do what they believe is best."

The tactical adjustment represents a significant statement from Arteta given Odegaard's status as club captain. Havertz will need to justify the manager's faith after an extended absence from Premier League starting lineups.

The severity of Saka's groin issue remains unclear, though the substitution before kickoff suggests caution from the medical staff. Arsenal face a congested fixture schedule with Champions League commitments alongside their Premier League title push.

San Jose Earthquakes Sign Timo Werner As Designated Player Until 2028

Jan 29, 2026 9:44 PM

The San Jose Earthquakes have signed RB Leipzig forward Timo Werner as a designated player through 2028, the MLS club confirmed Thursday. The move addresses significant roster needs after the club lost Josef Martinez and Cristian Espinoza to free agency.

Werner has played just 13 minutes across three appearances this season with Leipzig. Manager Bruce Arena believes the former Germany international will provide a substantial boost to San Jose's attack. A source confirmed forward Cristian Arango is likely headed to Colombian side Atletico Nacional.

"It's always a big decision to go to America, but everything is there to be successful," Werner said in a statement. "The stadium and the facilities are beautiful. Also, it really impressed me that an experienced manager like Bruce [Arena], who has had so much success in the league, flew over here to Germany to talk to me about the plan."

Arena traveled to Germany in December to meet Werner during a two-month recruitment process. The manager expressed confidence in the acquisition despite Werner's limited playing time this season.

"We feel he's going to be a great addition to the team as well as the league," Arena said in an exclusive interview with ESPN. "I think he's a player that still has a lot of good years ahead of him."

San Jose won MLS Cups in 2001 and 2003 but has qualified for the playoffs just three times in the past 13 seasons. The Quakes finished level on points with ninth-place Real Salt Lake last season but missed the postseason on the games won tiebreaker.

Werner earned 57 caps for Germany and posted his best form during a four-season spell with Leipzig from 2016 to 2020, scoring 95 goals in 159 league and cup appearances. He spent two seasons with Chelsea, scoring 23 goals in 89 appearances, and played on loan at Tottenham Hotspur the previous two seasons.

Arena plans to use preseason to determine Werner's optimal position, whether as a second striker or wide attacker.

Five Premier League Clubs In UCL Top-8, Set For $600M Payday

Jan 29, 2026 9:42 PM

Six Premier League clubs are set to earn at least $600 million combined in UEFA Champions League prize money this season, establishing England's financial dominance in European football. Five teams qualified directly for the round of 16 after finishing in the top eight of the 36-team standings.

Arsenal, Liverpool, Tottenham, Chelsea and Manchester City each earned an additional $2.4 million for their direct qualification Wednesday. Newcastle finished 12th and will enter the knockout playoffs seeded in Friday's draw.

"Each of them could easily earn the thick end of €100 million ($120 million) and those that get to the semifinals and final will earn more," said Kieran Maguire, a soccer finance academic and co-host of The Price of Football podcast.

England's share represents more than one dollar in every five from UEFA's total prize fund of nearly $3 billion distributed among 36 Champions League clubs. Arsenal completed a perfect eight-win record in the opening phase, while Liverpool and Tottenham placed third and fourth despite struggling domestically.

The financial disparity stems from three decades of increasing wealth from the Premier League's global broadcasting deals worth billions annually. Each of the league's 20 clubs receives nine-figure prize money payments, enabling mid-table teams to outbid Champions League regulars elsewhere for transfers and wages.

Spain's prize money will be reduced after Athletic Club and Villarreal failed to qualify for the 24-team knockout phase. Serie A champion Napoli and Eintracht Frankfurt were also eliminated.

Italy's top-ranked team, Inter Milan, finished only 10th in the standings despite reaching two of the past three Champions League finals. Juventus ended 13th while Atalanta placed 15th.

"It does mean that there is going to be an ever-increasing concentration of wealth in the hands of a small group of clubs," Maguire said.

Real Madrid Fall To Champions League Playoffs With Loss To Benfica

Jan 28, 2026 8:32 PM

Real Madrid were relegated to the Champions League qualifying playoffs after losing 4-2 to Benfica on Wednesday, with Ukrainian goalkeeper Anatoliy Trubin scoring a dramatic header in stoppage time. Former Madrid coach Jose Mourinho guided Benfica to a stunning upset that dropped the Spanish giants to ninth place in the 36-team standings.

Madrid started play in third position and needed only a draw to advance directly to the round of 16. Kylian Mbappe scored twice for the visitors, but Benfica secured victory when Trubin headed home in the eighth minute of stoppage time.

The goal came with Madrid reduced to nine players after red cards were shown to Raul Asencio and Rodrygo minutes earlier. Benfica advanced to the knockout phase in 24th place solely on goal difference.

"This victory is historic and important," Mourinho said. "We knew that he could do it. You have to put the ball there, but it's an amazing goal for the guy."

Trubin called it a crazy moment and said it was his first goal at age 24. Madrid fell from the top eight places when Sporting CP scored in stoppage time for a 3-2 victory at Athletic Club.

Paris Saint-Germain also dropped into the playoffs after drawing 1-1 with Newcastle in Paris. The result sent both clubs tumbling in the standings to 11th and 12th place respectively, despite both starting the day in the top eight.

PSG, Newcastle, Madrid and last year's beaten finalists Inter Milan will participate in Friday's qualifying playoffs draw for teams that placed ninth through 24th. The playoffs add two extra games in February for teams seeking to reach the round of 16.

"We could have played better, yes, granted. We could have obtained better results, yes," PSG coach Luis Enrique said. "But after analysing the type of matches that we've played, we're still there, and we're ready for the next matches."

Liverpool, Tottenham, Barcelona, Chelsea, Manchester City and Sporting CP sealed top-eight finishes. Arsenal completed a perfect eight-win program and Bayern Munich had already advanced to the round of 16 starting in March.

Nine Of 10 English Soccer Clubs Expect Pre-Tax Losses For 2025 Season

Jan 28, 2026 7:28 AM

Nine out of 10 teams in English football's top four divisions expect to post pre-tax losses for 2025 despite record revenues and rising club valuations. The findings come from an annual survey of club finance directors conducted by accountancy firm BDO.

The report, titled "Defying Gravity: The Ever-Expanding Financial Universe," reveals an industry dependent on regular shareholder top-ups and constant investment searches. Player wages continue to consume most club revenues across all divisions.

Premier League clubs spend 63 percent of revenues on player salaries. Championship teams allocate 93 pence of every pound earned to wages, creating unsustainable financial models at lower levels.

"By some measures, the English game is in rude health, with record-breaking revenues in the Premier League, new commercial opportunities for women's football and sustained high levels of interest from international and institutional investors," said BDO head of professional sports Ian Clayden. "But, below the surface, clubs are facing significant financial pressures, due in large part to the persistently high costs of wages as a proportion of overall revenues, and borrowing more."

Brighton, considered one of the Premier League's best-run clubs, lost more than $1.3 million weekly during the 2024-25 season. All clubs that have published results for that campaign posted losses.

More than half of finance directors described their teams' finances as acceptable but capable of improvement. Over one quarter indicated their situations require immediate attention, representing a worsening trend according to BDO.

Nearly 90 percent of clubs said they would need additional shareholder funding soon. Just under half indicated this may require shareholder dilution through minority or joint investment arrangements.

More than two thirds of clubs received approaches from potential investors in the past 12 months. BDO suggests capital injections show no signs of slowing despite mounting financial concerns.

Austin FC Acquire Facundo Torres From Palmeiras In $9.5M Transfer

Jan 27, 2026 11:26 PM

Austin FC acquired winger Facundo Torres from Brazilian Serie A side Palmeiras, the club announced. The 25-year-old Uruguay international signed through the 2029-30 season with an option for 2030-31 in a reported $9.5 million transfer.

Torres returns to MLS after a brief stint with Palmeiras following his December 2024 departure from Orlando City. The former Orlando standout produced 10 goals and six assists in 61 appearances for the Brazilian club.

The Uruguayan will occupy a Designated Player roster spot alongside attackers Brandon Vazquez and Myrto Uzuni. Torres holds a U.S. Green Card, allowing him to avoid consuming an international roster spot on Austin's roster.

"Facundo has proven attacking quality as shown by his stellar goal and assist numbers throughout his career," said Austin FC sporting director Rodolfo Borrell. "He is at a prime age to join us and immediately be a top contributor as we aim to push on this season."

Torres became Orlando City's all-time leading scorer with 47 goals and 25 assists in 123 matches across all competitions. He led the Lions to the 2022 US Open Cup title and helped Orlando reach the 2024 Eastern Conference Final.

Orlando received a club-record outbound fee of approximately $14 million when they sold Torres to Palmeiras. The transfer represented the largest sale in franchise history for the Florida-based club.

A product of Uruguayan powerhouse Penarol, Torres has earned 22 caps and scored two goals for Los Charruas. He participated in Uruguay's successful qualifying campaign for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

"I couldn't be happier to be an Austin FC player," Torres said. "The ambition behind what the club is building and the incredible soccer community there were both big factors in convincing me that this was the right move."

Liam Rosenior Says Cole Palmer Exit 'Unrealistic' Amid United Links

Jan 27, 2026 10:29 PM

Chelsea head coach Liam Rosenior dismissed reports suggesting Cole Palmer wants to join Manchester United as "unrealistic" and unfounded during his pre-match press conference. Speculation emerged that the 23-year-old feels unsettled at Stamford Bridge and remains open to joining his childhood club amid struggles in west London.

"There's no reason for assurance," Rosenior stated. "It's so unrealistic. It's come from nowhere. There's nothing in it. There's no reason to have the conversation. That's where I'm at."

Palmer has scored just four Premier League goals this season with visible frustration evident in his body language on the pitch. Injury has significantly disrupted his campaign, particularly as Chelsea exercised caution over minutes played by squad members considered especially valuable during recovery periods.

Rosenior confirmed Palmer traveled to Italy ahead of Wednesday's decisive Champions League match against Napoli after missing Sunday's 3-1 victory at Crystal Palace. The manager emphasized the midfielder's commitment to the club.

"Cole is very happy. I've had numerous conversations with him," Rosenior said. "Our thoughts are on how we can make this team better, how he can improve and how I can help him. He loves being here and he wants to be a Chelsea player."

The speculation comes as Rosenior has won four of his five matches since replacing Enzo Maresca, delivering a strong response to critics who questioned his experience. Despite positive results, he has repeatedly addressed questions about player futures.

"I'm not surprised at the timing," Rosenior noted. "A new manager comes in and all of a sudden there's people unsettled. It's not true. Cole's here, he's very happy and I can't wait to see him back on the pitch."

Reports also indicate Raheem Sterling's situation could be resolved by Monday's transfer deadline, more than 18 months after his last Chelsea appearance. Rosenior declined to discuss Sterling's circumstances in detail.

"Raheem is a player I have massive respect for," he said. "Huge respect for as a person and what he's achieved in the game. Now is not the right time to speak about his situation."

Chelsea need a victory to virtually guarantee bypassing February's playoff round and advancing directly to the Champions League round of 16. They face former manager Antonio Conte's Napoli side in a challenging atmosphere.

"This is a very strong team," Rosenior said of Napoli. "We know it's going to be a very difficult game in a very special atmosphere. It doesn't change my plans at all because I've been planning for a very difficult game."

Premier League Replacing Managers With Head Coaches In Corporate Shift

Jan 27, 2026 12:13 PM

The Premier League has undergone a fundamental transformation as traditional managers with consolidated power have been replaced by head coaches operating within corporate structures. Only five of 20 current Premier League clubs employ coaches with the official "manager" title, reflecting a dramatic shift in organizational philosophy.

Arsenal's trajectory following their 2004 Invincibles season illustrates how financial pressures accelerated this transformation. The club required a £260 million loan to construct Emirates Stadium, forcing manager Arsene Wenger to reduce player spending while servicing substantial debt obligations.

Banks refused to finance the stadium unless Arsenal guaranteed Wenger would remain manager for five additional years. The club effectively used their powerful manager as collateral, highlighting an era when individual coaches wielded extraordinary influence over operations.

Wenger controlled virtually every aspect of Arsenal's operations during his tenure. He determined transfer targets, managed contract negotiations, oversaw medical staff, and dictated tactical approaches without external interference from ownership or administrative departments.

"Some coaches are only interested in managing the team and they are happy with it. I am not like that, so I cannot change myself now," Wenger said in 2017.

Manchester United's Sir Alex Ferguson similarly dominated decision-making during his legendary tenure. He understood player age curves and performance patterns better than competitors, signing a higher proportion of players under 25 than rival clubs.

Ferguson recognized that successful team cycles lasted approximately four years and required constant evolution. His Manchester United won 13 Premier League titles in 26 seasons by combining financial advantages with superior long-term planning and aggressive late-game management.

Those competitive advantages have disappeared as knowledge became universalized across the league. All clubs now employ sophisticated analytics departments, understand optimal recruitment strategies, and recognize the importance of nutrition and sports science.

Modern Premier League clubs generate revenues comparable to major corporations rather than traditional sports organizations. Real Madrid's world-leading revenues reached €1.61 billion, compared to Manchester United's €132.4 million in the 1997-98 season when Deloitte first published financial data.

Growing numbers of American or finance-oriented ownership groups treat clubs as investment vehicles requiring corporate governance structures. These owners refuse to concentrate decision-making power in individuals whose average job tenure lasts just 1.42 years.

Contemporary clubs distribute authority among sporting directors, analytics teams, medical departments, and transfer committees. Coaches now integrate advice from multiple departments rather than building organizational structures around their preferences.

Liverpool's transformation from midtable mediocrity to elite status demonstrated the effectiveness of collaborative decision-making. However, maintaining balance proved challenging as key front office personnel departed toward the end of Jurgen Klopp's tenure.

Recent high-profile dismissals highlight tensions between coaches expecting managerial authority and clubs demanding compliance with organizational hierarchies. Ruben Amorim expressed frustration during his final Manchester United press conference about lacking traditional managerial power.

"I came here to be the manager, not the coach," Amorim said.

Enzo Maresca departed Chelsea after conflicts with front office personnel regarding medical recommendations and transfer decisions. Both coaches envisioned themselves as powerful managers while their employers had eliminated that role entirely.

Chelsea currently employ eight sporting directors, illustrating the bureaucratic complexity that has replaced consolidated managerial control. Tottenham recently recognized the inefficiency and reduced to a single sporting director.

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola represents the closest approximation to traditional managerial power among elite clubs. When he eventually departs, the club will likely hire someone requiring less authority rather than replicating his influential position.

Arsenal replaced Wenger with head coach Unai Emery and expanded operations staff significantly. The club eventually promoted Mikel Arteta from head coach to manager, representing a hybrid approach that balances modern organizational structures with traditional leadership.

The shift from managers to head coaches reflects ownership groups viewing clubs as corporations requiring distributed decision-making. However, most implementations have created new inefficiencies as bureaucratic complexity replaced the clarity of consolidated authority.

Coaches now face awkward situations answering media questions about decisions they did not make while reporting to executives with less coaching success. The Premier League has reached an inflection point where coach and club expectations are fundamentally misaligned.

Fermin Lopez Commits To Barcelona Until 2031, Ending Chelsea Interest

Jan 27, 2026 3:04 PM

Barcelona midfielder Fermin Lopez has agreed to a contract extension through 2031, sources confirmed to ESPN, eliminating Chelsea's pursuit of the Spain international for the foreseeable future. The new deal secures one of Barcelona's most productive players amid growing interest from Premier League clubs.

Chelsea explored acquiring Fermin last summer, though no transfer materialized at that time. The threat of a wealthy English club presenting a substantial offer remained a concern for Barcelona throughout the season.

Barcelona initiated extension negotiations earlier this month with dual objectives. Sources indicated the club aimed to deter English suitors while simultaneously rewarding Fermin for his exceptional performances this campaign.

Sources added that Barcelona wanted to finalize the renewal before presidential elections scheduled for March. Coach Hansi Flick sought to avoid repeating last summer's situation when Fermin's future became a persistent source of speculation.

Fermin's previous contract contained three remaining years and included a $596 million release clause. The new agreement extends his commitment significantly while maintaining financial protection for the club.

Teammates have welcomed the news enthusiastically, including Dani Olmo, who directly competes with Fermin for the No. 10 position in Barcelona's formation.

"I am delighted for him because it's what he wants, to be here with us," Olmo said in a press conference ahead of Wednesday's Champions League match against Copenhagen. "He is an incredible player and a wonderful teammate. Renewing his deal is good news for everyone: the club, the dressing room, the fans."

"We have a great relationship on the pitch. I know we play the same position, but it's never been a problem, and now we are getting more chances to play together as well," Olmo said. "We have shown we are compatible and I am happy to keep getting minutes alongside him."

Fermin has recorded 10 goals and 10 assists across all competitions this season. He ranks among just four players in Europe's top five leagues reaching double figures in both categories, joining teammate Lamine Yamal and Bayern Munich duo Michael Olise and Luis Diaz.

The academy product leads Barcelona in Champions League scoring with five goals entering Copenhagen's visit to Spotify Camp Nou this week. The LaLiga leaders seek to secure placement in the top eight and automatic qualification for the round of 16.

Barcelona will miss Pedri and Frenkie de Jong in midfield against the Danish side, with Pedri injured and de Jong suspended. However, Ferran Torres has recovered and returns to availability.

A victory should elevate Barcelona from ninth position into the top eight of the standings, though advancement is not mathematically guaranteed. The team requires maximum effort against Copenhagen to achieve their objective.

"The most important thing is that we do our job," Flick said in a press conference. "We have to play our best level. We want to win and reach the first eight."

"We just look at ourselves. We have to play a tough match against Copenhagen. We have to play our best level. This is our philosophy," Flick said. "We have the confidence in our style, how we play football. This is what I want to see. The Champions League is always about reaching your top level."

The 22-year-old's extension represents a significant victory for Barcelona's retention efforts amid financial constraints. The club has struggled to keep promising young talent as wealthier European rivals offer lucrative contracts.

Fermin's development through Barcelona's academy system to first-team regular validates the club's youth development philosophy. His production this season demonstrates readiness to assume a prominent role for years to come.

The extension eliminates uncertainty surrounding one of Barcelona's key midfielders while the club navigates a competitive season across multiple competitions. Securing Fermin's commitment provides stability as Barcelona pursues domestic and European honors.

PSG Complete $9.5M Signing of Barcelona Teenager Dro Fernandez

Jan 26, 2026 5:06 PM

Paris Saint-Germain have completed the signing of Barcelona teenager Dro Fernandez after exercising his $9.5 million release clause with the LaLiga club. The 18-year-old midfielder surprised Barcelona earlier this month by announcing his intention to depart in January seeking regular playing time.

Fernandez expressed enthusiasm during his PSG presentation following the transfer. The attacking midfielder joins a French club that defeated multiple European powers in pursuit of his signature.

"I'm very happy and very proud to be joining Paris Saint-Germain. This is a moment of huge pride for me and for my family," Fernandez said. "I'm hugely excited and motivated to play and to give everything for this shirt."

PSG coach Luis Enrique played a decisive role in securing the transfer. Sources told ESPN that Luis Enrique, who shares an agent with Fernandez in Ivan de la Pena, spoke with the player by phone and convinced him to move to France.

Barcelona coach Hansi Flick reacted negatively to Fernandez's departure after demonstrating significant confidence in the young midfielder. Flick has drawn comparisons between Fernandez and established stars Thiago Alcantara and Pedri.

Flick brought Fernandez on Barcelona's preseason tour of Asia last summer, where the teenager scored against Daegu FC. The coach awarded him debuts in both LaLiga and Champions League competition this season despite his youth.

Speaking last weekend after Fernandez communicated his decision to leave, Flick said he did not want players who were not 100% committed and inferred that "people around" the player had played a major role in influencing him.

Fernandez does not perceive a clear pathway to first team football at Barcelona, particularly within Flick's preferred 4-2-3-1 formation. Sources told ESPN the system places Frenkie de Jong and Pedri at the base of midfield, limiting opportunities for the young prospect.

Fernandez's optimal position in Flick's system would be as the No. 10, where Fermin Lopez, Dani Olmo and Raphinha have accumulated the majority of minutes. He could potentially play wide but prefers developing as a No. 8 midfielder eventually.

The teenager made five first-team appearances this season but logged only 148 minutes total. His last outing came as a substitute against Atletico Madrid on December 2, highlighting his limited opportunities.

Barcelona officials were surprised to learn of Fernandez's decision, according to ESPN sources. The club expected him to sign a new contract with an increased release clause once he turned 18 years old.

Fernandez celebrated his 18th birthday on January 12, with teammate Raphinha presenting him a cake on the flight back from the Spanish Supercopa final in Saudi Arabia. That moment now represents his final appearance in Barcelona colors.

The midfielder joined Barcelona's academy at age 14 in 2022. His rapid development through the youth system suggested a promising future with the Catalan club before his surprising departure.

PSG's willingness to activate the relatively modest release clause reflects their confidence in Fernandez's potential. The French champions defeated numerous European clubs competing for the talented teenager's services.

Luis Enrique's personal involvement in recruiting Fernandez demonstrates PSG's commitment to developing young talent. The coach's existing relationship with the player's agent facilitated communication throughout the negotiation process.

The transfer represents another example of Barcelona losing promising academy graduates to European rivals. Financial constraints and squad depth continue challenging the club's ability to retain developing talent.
