Liverpool have declined to authorize left-back Andy Robertson's transfer to Tottenham Hotspur during the current window, despite preliminary discussions between the clubs. The Athletic reported Friday that talks occurred regarding a permanent deal for the Scotland international, whose contract expires this summer.

Tottenham believed an agreement was reached in principle following Liverpool's Champions League match against Qarabag on Wednesday. However, the deal remained dependent on Liverpool securing a replacement, which they have not accomplished.

Liverpool evaluated manager Arne Slot's squad needs and Robertson's situation before determining the 31-year-old vice-captain would not depart at this time. The Merseyside club explored options including recalling Kostas Tsimikas from his loan at Roma to provide backup for first-choice left-back Milos Kerkez.

That solution would require Roma's consent and a replacement signing by the Serie A club. Roma sporting director Frederic Massara told DAZN, according to Italian reports, that his team discussed Tsimikas' future with Liverpool on Sunday.

Tottenham originally targeted Robertson as a free agent for summer but accelerated their interest after Ben Davies fractured his ankle. Robertson has not requested a transfer and demonstrated professionalism with his performance as a substitute in Liverpool's 3-2 loss to Bournemouth on Saturday.

Liverpool now anticipate the defender will remain at Anfield through season's end when his current deal concludes. He has made 364 appearances for Liverpool since arriving from Hull City for $13 million in 2017.

"He's my vice-captain," captain Virgil van Dijk said after the Bournemouth match. "Robbo is a very important member of our team and I want him to stay but whatever happens, let's see."

Slot's defensive options are already limited with Conor Bradley and Giovanni Leoni sidelined by season-ending knee injuries. Ibrahima Konate missed the past two matches following his father's death, while Joe Gomez exited Saturday after a collision with goalkeeper Alisson.
