Relegated West Ham United plan to seek $108 million for midfielder Mateus Fernandes, with Manchester United and Paris Saint-Germain among the clubs pursuing the 21-year-old Portugal international. West Ham have yet to receive a formal approach for the player.
The East London club need to generate approximately $203 million this summer following their Premier League relegation. Fernandes, signed for $51 million from Southampton last summer, represents one of their most valuable assets. Southampton retained a 15 percent sell-on clause in the deal.
Manchester United have held preliminary discussions over a potential fee and wages, though they recently agreed a separate deal to sign Atletico Madrid midfielder Ederson for up to $61 million. United head coach Michael Carrick is seeking a midfield partner for Kobbie Mainoo, with Manuel Ugarte's future at the club uncertain.
Fernandes contributed five goals and four assists across 40 appearances last season despite West Ham's relegation. He was a leading contender for the club's player of the year award.
The Portuguese midfielder has cited his compatriot Bruno Fernandes as his primary role model, with the pair sharing roots in Sporting Club's academy in Lisbon.
"The biggest one right now is Bruno Fernandes because of the player he is," said Mateus Fernandes. "Back when I was at Sporting, I looked up to him and tried to learn from him. He plays in the same league as me, he has a lot of experience with the national team and in the Premier League. I try to watch him a lot. Without a doubt, he stands out."
Fernandes holds a contract at West Ham through 2030 and has no release clause. Despite his strong club form, he was not selected for Portugal's World Cup squad.
