West Ham Valuing Mateus Fernandes At $108M

Jun 4, 2026 3:26 PM

Relegated West Ham United plan to seek $108 million for midfielder Mateus Fernandes, with Manchester United and Paris Saint-Germain among the clubs pursuing the 21-year-old Portugal international. West Ham have yet to receive a formal approach for the player.

The East London club need to generate approximately $203 million this summer following their Premier League relegation. Fernandes, signed for $51 million from Southampton last summer, represents one of their most valuable assets. Southampton retained a 15 percent sell-on clause in the deal.

Manchester United have held preliminary discussions over a potential fee and wages, though they recently agreed a separate deal to sign Atletico Madrid midfielder Ederson for up to $61 million. United head coach Michael Carrick is seeking a midfield partner for Kobbie Mainoo, with Manuel Ugarte's future at the club uncertain.

Fernandes contributed five goals and four assists across 40 appearances last season despite West Ham's relegation. He was a leading contender for the club's player of the year award.

The Portuguese midfielder has cited his compatriot Bruno Fernandes as his primary role model, with the pair sharing roots in Sporting Club's academy in Lisbon.

"The biggest one right now is Bruno Fernandes because of the player he is," said Mateus Fernandes. "Back when I was at Sporting, I looked up to him and tried to learn from him. He plays in the same league as me, he has a lot of experience with the national team and in the Premier League. I try to watch him a lot. Without a doubt, he stands out."

Fernandes holds a contract at West Ham through 2030 and has no release clause. Despite his strong club form, he was not selected for Portugal's World Cup squad.

Liverpool Appoint Andoni Iraola As Head Coach

Jun 4, 2026 3:18 PM

Liverpool have named Andoni Iraola as their new head coach after dismissing Arne Slot on Saturday, the club announced Thursday. The 43-year-old has signed a two-year contract, sources told ESPN.

Iraola arrives from AFC Bournemouth, where he spent three seasons and guided the club to a sixth-place Premier League finish last season. He was the only candidate interviewed for the position, with sources indicating he emerged as Liverpool's clear first choice from the outset.

"You don't need a lot of things to get attracted by Liverpool. Liverpool is Liverpool," said Iraola. "But obviously the atmosphere, the supporters, the club, the players, the chance for me to coach top-level players, the chance to fight for titles. I think it cannot be more attractive than this. It's difficult to find it. So, really excited to start."

Slot led Liverpool to the Premier League title in his debut 2024-25 season but was removed after the club dropped to fifth place this term. Liverpool had previously assessed Iraola as a long-term successor to Jurgen Klopp four years ago when he managed Rayo Vallecano.

The club was drawn to Iraola's ability to build Bournemouth into one of the Premier League's most dynamic sides despite limited financial resources. His high-intensity, structured style drew direct comparisons to the approach that defined Liverpool's success under Klopp.

"I think I have the advantage that I've been here already three years in the Premier League, and people for sure have seen Bournemouth play," said Iraola. "There are some things that obviously we need to change, coaching Liverpool, but I wouldn't like to lose our identity -- the intensity, the aggressiveness, the organization.

"Obviously you have to adapt to the players you have, and it's not the same at one club or the other, but there are fundamentals that I also think match quite well, what has been Liverpool during a lot of years, that I think we can make it work."

Iraola's path to Anfield was facilitated in part by sporting director Richard Hughes, who appointed the Basque coach at Bournemouth in 2023 before joining Liverpool the following year.

Goldman Sachs World Cup Model Favors Spain, Cautions Argentina Odds

Jun 4, 2026 2:42 PM

Goldman Sachs has released its 2026 World Cup probability model, giving Spain a 26 percent chance of claiming the title, followed by France at 19 percent and Argentina at 14 percent. The report was led by chief economist and Global Investment Research head Jan Hatzius.

The bank's model analyzes nearly 20,000 matches since 1978, factoring in historical performance, scoring output, team momentum and geography. Economists specifically cautioned that Argentina may underperform due to a "winner's slump" following their 2022 championship.

Goldman also projected Round of 16 advancement probabilities for all three host nations: Mexico leads at 68 percent, Canada at 50 percent and the United States at 39 percent.

The firm acknowledges the model's limitations. Economists noted it does not fully account for player fitness, managerial experience or other variables, describing soccer's outcome as carrying "inherent unpredictability."

Goldman's track record is mixed. In 2018, the bank projected Brazil as the favorite after one million simulations. Brazil was eliminated in the quarterfinals, with France ultimately defeating Croatia in the final.

Independent experts urge caution when interpreting the findings. Jacek Dmochowski, an engineering professor at The City College of New York, called it a "fun exercise" that falls well short of online prediction markets in accuracy.

"The information that is going into (Goldman's) model is a tiny sliver of all the information that's in the possession of the millions of people that have bet into (online) prediction markets," said Dmochowski.

Both Polymarket and Bet365 currently place Spain's winning odds below 20 percent, in line with Goldman's general hierarchy but differing on specific figures.

Yan Diomande Hints At PSG Preference As Liverpool Circle $150M Winger

Jun 4, 2026 8:13 AM

RB Leipzig winger Yan Diomande has publicly expressed admiration for Paris Saint-Germain while Liverpool remain among clubs tracking the 19-year-old, sources told ESPN. Leipzig have set an opening asking price of $150 million for the Bundesliga standout.

Diomande enjoyed a remarkable debut campaign in Germany, recording 12 goals and nine assists to claim the Bundesliga Rookie of the Season award.

Speaking to French media, Diomande made clear his affection for the Champions League holders.

"Paris Saint-Germain is a team I've loved since I was little," said Diomande. "I think my father was a PSG supporter. It's a team I admire as a football fan.

"But I'm not thinking about the future. I'm staying focused on the World Cup and then we'll see what happens. They'll sort things out between clubs and we'll see what happens next.

"I'm under contract with Leipzig and I love playing here."

In a separate interview with Telefoot on TF1, Diomande was more direct about his feelings toward a potential move to France.

"Yeah, it would be a pleasure for me to come and play here with one of the biggest clubs," said Diomande. "It's always a pleasure to come here because, already the language, with French, adapting won't be difficult, so why not? But then again, I'm an RB Leipzig player, so there you go."

The Ivory Coast international is contracted at Leipzig through 2030 and will feature as a key player for his nation at the upcoming World Cup. PSG, who claimed back-to-back Champions League titles, have also been linked with the versatile winger.

City Explore Lawsuit Over Riquelme's Erling Haaland Transfer Promise

Jun 4, 2026 7:54 AM

Manchester City are exploring legal action against Real Madrid presidential candidate Enrique Riquelme after he publicly claimed he would sign striker Erling Haaland if elected club president. City have called the statements false and unauthorized.

Riquelme, a 37-year-old renewable energy entrepreneur, appeared on Spanish television program El Hormiguero Wednesday, presenting a Madrid jersey bearing Haaland's name and number while challenging incumbent president Florentino Perez.

"Haaland has a release clause and wants to join Real Madrid," said Riquelme.

Riquelme added that he would reimburse membership fees for all 100,000 Real Madrid members next season if he failed to deliver the Norwegian forward, who signed a new contract in January keeping him at City through 2034.

Haaland's representatives swiftly dismissed the claims as entertaining but false. City then issued a formal response.

"The stories which have emerged from Spain regarding the future of Erling Haaland are untrue," said a club spokesperson. "There is no chance of this happening and there is no contractual clause to enable it.

"We are considering legal action for the use of our player image in this context."

Riquelme also pledged to sign City midfielder Rodri, whose contract at the Etihad Stadium expires at the end of next season. City have consistently maintained they will not sell the Spain international this summer.

Perez, 79, has served as Madrid president since 2000 and remains the strong favorite for re-election. On Wednesday, he confirmed Jose Mourinho as his managerial choice, along with free agent defender Ibrahima Konate and Inter Milan's Denzel Dumfries as anticipated arrivals.

Forest Reject City Offer For Elliot Anderson Amid $161M Valuation

Jun 4, 2026 7:51 AM

Nottingham Forest has rejected an opening offer from Manchester City for midfielder Elliot Anderson, sources told ESPN. City view the 23-year-old as their top summer transfer priority and are expected to submit a revised bid.

The two clubs hold significantly different valuations of the England international. Forest are seeking approximately $161 million for Anderson, while City's initial offer was closer to $107 million.

Manchester United have also registered interest in Anderson, though Forest's asking price presents a considerable obstacle for any potential suitor.

City executives do not expect a quick resolution, with Anderson currently on international duty with England at their World Cup training base in Florida.

Beyond the Anderson pursuit, City are scouting right-backs and right wingers ahead of the summer window. The club seeks a young right-back to compete with Matheus Nunes, 27, who held the starting position last season. City sources stress the club remains satisfied with Nunes and has no plans to move him on.

The future of 21-year-old Rico Lewis remains uncertain following a difficult season at the Etihad Stadium. Lewis, who attracted interest from Forest last summer, is weighing his options regarding a potential departure.

Separately, City are in ongoing discussions with Chelsea over compensation before officially naming Enzo Maresca as their new manager. Maresca departed Stamford Bridge in January and has been selected to succeed Pep Guardiola, but the formal announcement has been delayed by unresolved financial negotiations between the two clubs.

Lamine Yamal Set To Miss Spain Warmup, Expected For First Group Match

Jun 3, 2026 4:12 PM

Spain coach Luis de la Fuente said Wednesday he expects Lamine Yamal to be available for the team's World Cup opener against Cape Verde in Atlanta on June 15, though the 18-year-old will sit out Thursday's warmup match against Iraq in A Coruna.

"If nothing changes, he could be ready to play on June 15," De la Fuente said. "It doesn't mean that for sure he will play, we'll see. Maybe a few minutes, maybe just practice so he can improve his condition for the second match. We will have to evaluate."

Yamal suffered a left hamstring injury while converting a penalty kick for Barcelona in a Spanish league match on April 22. The Barcelona forward said this week he feared missing the tournament entirely and prayed he would recover in time.

De la Fuente also confirmed that Nico Williams and Victor Munoz, both carrying injuries, will sit out Thursday's match alongside players who featured in last week's Champions League final.

Spain's final warmup match is scheduled against Peru in Mexico on Monday. De la Fuente declined to specify who would feature in that fixture.

Yamal is expected to be the focal point of a Spain side seeking its second World Cup title. The defending European champions have not advanced past the round of 16 at the World Cup since their lone triumph in 2010.

After opening against Cape Verde in Group H, Spain face Saudi Arabia on June 21 in Atlanta and Uruguay on June 26 in Guadalajara.

"We are all excited to get started and try to do well at the tournament," De la Fuente said.

Spain are overall favorites to win the World Cup.

Bayern Overtake Real Madrid As UEFA's Top-Ranked Club; PSG Fifth

Jun 3, 2026 3:14 PM

Bayern Munich have displaced Real Madrid as UEFA's highest-ranked club for the 2026-27 season, the governing body confirmed in its annual club coefficient standings, which determine seedings for European competition draws.

The shift comes despite Madrid winning two Champions League titles within the five-year calculation window, in 2021-22 and 2023-24. Bayern have not reached the final during the same period but have advanced to the quarter-final stage or further in each of the past five seasons, including two semi-final appearances. This season's run included a 6-4 aggregate victory over Madrid in the quarter-finals, winning both legs.

Madrid's slide from the summit reflects successive quarter-final eliminations and a requirement to enter the knockout play-off phase in each of the past two campaigns after finishing outside the top eight in the Champions League league phase.

Rankings are calculated using a points-based system across a rolling five-year period, with each club receiving either its cumulative coefficient from continental competition since 2021-22 or 20 percent of its national association's coefficient over the same period, whichever figure is higher.

Paris Saint-Germain climb two places to third following their second consecutive Champions League title, secured with a final victory over Arsenal. Arsenal, who recorded the highest single-season coefficient points for 2025-26, rise five places to seventh. Liverpool remain fourth after a second straight elimination by PSG, while Manchester City drop four places to sixth following back-to-back last-16 exits.

Inter Milan hold fifth, with Barcelona eighth, Bayer Leverkusen ninth, and Atletico Madrid tenth rounding out the top 10. Aston Villa are the most dramatic movers in the full standings, jumping 29 places to 17th.

Chelsea fall five places to 12th after their last-16 loss to PSG, while Manchester United slip from 11th to 21st following a season without any European competition.

World Cup Betting At U.S. Sportsbooks Projected To Hit $2.9 Billion

Jun 3, 2026 3:10 PM

Analysts project $2.9 billion will be wagered on the FIFA World Cup at U.S. sportsbooks this summer, more than double the amount bet on the 2022 tournament and a figure that could climb significantly higher if the United States advances deep into the competition.

The estimate from betting industry researchers would place World Cup handle ahead of Super Bowl LX, on which approximately $1.7 billion was wagered between the New England Patriots and Seattle Seahawks, according to gambling industry reporter Chris Altruda using state revenue reports. NCAA basketball tournament wagering was expected to exceed $3 billion.

Research firm Eilers and Krejcik Gaming projects that a strong USMNT run could push World Cup handle to $4.4 billion at American sportsbooks, which would surpass the 2026 NCAA tournament entirely.

"The Super Bowl is the pinnacle, but the World Cup is going to be a couple dozen Super Bowls back-to-back-to-back-to-back over the span of six weeks," said Brian Josephs, vice president of Americas for Sportradar.

Industry executives point to favorable time zones, domestic host venues, and general public excitement as factors that could draw both casual and committed bettors. DraftKings EVP and GM of sports Greg Karamitis said the tournament reshapes what is traditionally a quiet period for sportsbooks.

"In general, the summer tends to be quieter. Injecting the World Cup into it totally reshapes the field of sports for the summer," Karamitis told ESPN.

The global picture is even larger in volume. H2 Gambling Capital, a London-based consultancy, estimates $60 billion will be wagered on the World Cup at regulated sportsbooks worldwide, a 71 percent increase from 2022. The jump reflects both the expanded 48-team field, which adds 40 additional matches, and new legal betting markets that have opened since the last tournament, including Brazil.

Beyond traditional sportsbooks, prediction markets add another layer. DeFi Rate projects more than $2.5 billion could be traded on World Cup outcomes on U.S. prediction markets, with analyst Cheryle Shepstone telling ESPN that World Cup winner trading volume is on pace to more than double what was traded on the NCAA tournament champion.

Josh Abe Signs Scholarship, Pre-Contract With Liverpool

Jun 3, 2026 12:02 PM

Liverpool have secured the long-term future of 15-year-old winger Josh Abe, who has signed scholarship terms and a pre-contract for a three-year professional deal beginning in July 2027, rejecting advances from several Premier League clubs.

Negotiations were led by Fenway Sports Group technical director Julian Ward over several months. Sources close to the process, speaking on condition of anonymity, said rival clubs offered Abe professional terms of up to $63,000 per week to leave Liverpool.

Abe and his family ultimately determined that Liverpool's pathway to the first team best served his long-term interests. Manchester City and Chelsea were among the clubs pursuing the Kirkby academy product.

A productive youth campaign was cut short by a knee injury sustained while representing England Under-16s in a tournament in Turkey in February. He is expected to be fit for pre-season and will join the senior squad for a summer tour of the United States, with friendlies scheduled in Nashville, New York and Chicago. He will also receive a first-team squad number for 2026-27.

A native of Warrington, roughly 20 miles east of Liverpool, Abe joined the club's pre-academy at age four after being identified by scouts at a junior club in his hometown. He has since risen through the ranks at Kirkby and is regarded by coaches as the standout talent in his age group.

In February, he made his UEFA Youth League debut against MSK Zilina and scored a hat-trick in a 6-1 win over Leeds United at Under-18 level. Abe trained with Arne Slot's first-team squad on multiple occasions last season. His development is expected to continue under incoming head coach Andoni Iraola, who has reached a verbal agreement to take charge at Anfield.
