Josep Maria Bartomeu Steps Down As President Of Barcelona

Oct 27, 2020 6:11 PM

Josep Maria Bartomeu has stepped down as president of Barcelona, as did the rest of the board of directors.

An election will be scheduled within the next 90 days to appoint a new president.

"It's a thought-out, serene, informed decision" to resign, Bartomeu said in a televised speech.

More than 20,000 supporters signed a petition this month for him to be removed as president after growing increasingly upset with his management of the club.

Bartomeu lost the support of Lionel Messi, Gerard Pique and several other players.

Pep Guardiola: City Couldn't Afford To Buy Striker In Summer Window

Oct 26, 2020 4:05 PM

Pep Guardiola suggested Manchester City couldn't afford to buy a striker in the summer as both Sergio Aguero and Gabriel Jesus have been ruled of Tuesday's match against Marseille.

"Maybe yeah we considered it [buying a striker], we thought about it, another maybe type of striker but we could not so I think the club do what they can," said Guardiola.

"It's not a club that wants revenues at the end of the year, it's what they want and what's best for the team.

"If you decide to buy a striker, it has to be a striker in the league of Gabriel and Sergio but we cannot afford it. That is the reality.

"I'm not saying the club didn't want to do it, not just in terms of strikers but in every position, but they wanted to make as strong a team as possible to make more games and better. But we thought 'OK, Sergio is back and we didn't expect Gabriel to be injured.' Sometimes it happens."

Isco Caught Complaining About Role Under Zidane During Clasico

Oct 26, 2020 4:03 PM

Isco was caught on camera during Saturday's Clasico complaining about his limited role on Real Madrid under Zinedine Zidane.

Isco was picked up by Movistar TV cameras talking to Luka Modric and Marcelo as they sat in the stands before the match.

"If [Zidane] has to take me off, he takes me off in the 50th or 60th minute, sometimes at half-time," Isco said, which led to laughter from his teammates. "If he has to bring me on, he brings me on in the 80th minute."

Zidane said he had "no doubts" about Isco, saying it was "a bad day, we want to change things, and Isco first of all."

Alphonso Davies will miss 6-8 weeks due to ligament damage in his ankle.

Davies suffered the injury three minutes into Bayern's 5-0 win against Eintracht.

"He sustained a ligament injury. One ligament is fully torn, another is partially torn. We reckon he'll be sidelined for six to eight weeks. It hurts when a player of this quality is ruled out," said Hansi Flick.

Davies was replaced by Lucas Hernandez.

Mesut Ozil Left Out Of Arsenal's Premier League Squad

Oct 20, 2020 8:07 AM

Mesut Ozil may have already played his final match for Arsenal after he was left out of the club's 25-man Premier League squad.

Ozil hasn't played a single minute for Arsenal since March 7th and was not registered for the Europa League.

The only other competition the Gunners will play in before Christmas is the EFL Cup and the rules dictate "a registered player is one who would be registered and eligible to participate in a Premier League match" or is an under-21 player.

Barcelona To Try To Sign Memphis Depay Over Winter

Oct 18, 2020 10:28 PM

Ronald Koeman said that Barcelona will try to sign Memphis Depay over the winter window.

Depay reportedly reached a personal agreement with Barcelona, though Lyon could not agree to a transfer fee.

"For me, it's just a question of waiting. We wanted Memphis because he's a great player and because he has qualities that, in my opinion, we lack. Especially depth in the attacking play.

"The majority of Barcelona's attacking players want the ball to their feet. Memphis can be used as an outlet, but he's also capable of going in behind. He's strong, dynamic and can play as well as a striker or as a left winger," said Koeman.

Koeman added that he wanted to sign Depay in addition to keeping Lionel Messi in the squad.

"In my mind, I always assumed that he would stay," added Koeman on Messi.
