Liverpool, United Target Brighton's Carlos Baleba In Transfer Race

Sep 30, 2025 10:57 PM

Liverpool and Manchester United are competing for Brighton & Hove Albion midfielder Carlos Baleba, with both Premier League clubs monitoring the 21-year-old ahead of potential summer moves. United hold "concrete interest" in Baleba, while Liverpool could "step up" their pursuit in coming months, according to TEAMtalk.

Brighton would require an offer worth at least £100m to consider selling Baleba, according to previous reports. The Seagulls signed the midfielder on a five-year contract in August 2023 for an initial fee of €27 million with €3 million in potential add-ons.

United's pursuit of Baleba is not expected to be affected by any decision regarding manager Ruben Amorim's future. The club's interest remains firm regardless of potential managerial changes at Old Trafford.

Liverpool currently lead the Premier League and view Baleba as a potential midfield reinforcement. The club's interest could intensify as they plan for squad development beyond the current season.

Baleba has established himself as an important midfielder for Brighton since arriving from Lille in 2023. His performances in the Premier League have attracted attention from top clubs seeking dynamic midfield options.

The transfer interest from both Liverpool and Manchester United sets up a potential bidding situation that could drive Baleba's price even higher than Brighton's current valuation.

Charles Altchek Elevated As MLS Positions Potential Next Commissioner

Sep 30, 2025 10:53 PM

Major League Soccer has promoted Charles Altchek to executive vice president for club performance and league growth, filling a position vacated earlier this year by Chris McGowan. The 40-year-old executive is widely viewed within MLS as a potential future commissioner who could eventually succeed Don Garber.

Altchek will oversee business operations for all 30 clubs, working with owners and chief business officers on strategic decisions and performance analysis. He will also evaluate new markets for potential expansion while maintaining involvement in player development pathways.

Altchek joined the MLS league office in 2014 after previous positions with the New York Red Bulls, New York Mets and Goldman Sachs. His early work included helping establish LAFC, now the league's most valuable franchise.

The former Harvard soccer player has helped craft the expansion strategy that brought nearly a third of MLS's current 30 franchises into the league. Most recently, he served as president of MLS Next Pro, launching the league in 2022 and overseeing its subsequent growth.

"Charles has played an integral role in the growth of Major League Soccer over the past decade," Garber said in a statement. "His leadership in launching and expanding MLS Next Pro, his work with clubs across our ecosystem and his experience at the team level make him uniquely qualified to lead our efforts in club performance."

Garber, 67, became MLS commissioner in 1999 and recently signed a four-year contract through the 2027 season. He is the second longest-tenured commissioner among major U.S. sports leagues.

Altchek's promotion adds business and ownership experience to his existing player development expertise. Ali Curtis, a former MLS player and current SVP of sporting development, will replace Altchek as president of MLS Next Pro.

McGowan left MLS to launch a consulting firm but continues advising the league in various capacities.

Jurgen Klopp Says He Misses 'Nothing' About Coaching

Sep 30, 2025 10:35 AM

Jurgen Klopp emphatically stated he does not plan to return to coaching, telling The Athletic he misses "nothing" about his former life managing Liverpool. The former Reds boss, now global head of soccer at Red Bull, sharply criticized FIFA's expanding tournament calendar in his first extensive English-language interview since starting his new role.

Klopp left Liverpool in summer 2024 after nine years that included Premier League and Champions League titles. He began work at Red Bull in January, overseeing playing philosophy and transfer strategy across the company's global soccer portfolio.

The 58-year-old dismissed any possibility of returning to the touchline when asked if he would ever coach again. He acknowledged he might reconsider at age 65, but expressed certainty about his current stance.

"I didn't know when games started. I was just out. I played sports. We enjoyed life, spent time with the grandkids, completely normal stuff, knowing I will work again," Klopp said. "But knowing as well, that I don't want to work as a coach anymore."

"I don't miss anything," he added when asked about his coaching career.

Klopp intensified his criticism of FIFA's tournament expansion plans, calling the 32-team Club World Cup problematic for player welfare. He expressed strong opposition to a proposed 64-team World Cup in 2030.

"My expertise is I know how much you can expect from football players," Klopp said. "There's no solution besides stopping organising new tournaments in the summer break. There's no break anymore for the best players in the world."

Klopp was actively involved in RB Leipzig's transfer window, which saw 26 players move in and out. He reviews player profiles and makes recruitment calls for Red Bull's teams, which include clubs in Germany, Austria, France, the United States, Brazil and Japan.

The German manager said he has attended the cinema four times in the past eight weeks after going just four times in 25 years as a coach.

Ruben Amorim Preparing For Next United Match Despite Mounting Pressure

Sep 29, 2025 11:54 AM

Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim is continuing preparations as normal for next weekend's match against Sunderland, according to sources who told ESPN the Portuguese coach has received no indication his job is in jeopardy despite recent struggles.

Amorim faces increasing scrutiny after Saturday's 3-1 loss to Brentford marked his 17th defeat in 33 Premier League matches since his November appointment. The result left United languishing in 14th place in the table ahead of Sunderland's visit to Old Trafford.

The 40-year-old attended a pre-scheduled family open day at Carrington on Sunday alongside players and staff. The event allowed families to tour the training ground's newly renovated facilities, with children participating in organized activities before a group meal in the upgraded canteen.

Sources confirmed the squad received Monday off, with preparations for Sunderland set to intensify when training resumes Tuesday. United sources insist the club is not actively seeking Amorim's replacement and have denied speculation that co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe met with former England manager Gareth Southgate.

The United hierarchy remains committed to giving Amorim time to reverse the club's fortunes. However, there is acknowledgment that results must improve rapidly if the club hopes to meet its preseason objective of European qualification.

Southgate was previously considered as a potential replacement for Erik ten Hag before Amorim's appointment. United's challenging schedule continues with a two-week international break following the Sunderland fixture, before facing Liverpool at Anfield on October 19 and hosting Brighton on October 25.

The work has already started and I am looking forward to the challenge that is ahead.”

Erling Haaland Has Evolved Into Complete Striker In Guardiola's System

Sep 26, 2025 2:28 PM

Erling Haaland has transformed into a more complete striker at Manchester City, with advanced statistics showing dramatically increased defensive contributions and overall pitch involvement. The 25-year-old Norwegian leads the Premier League Golden Boot race with six goals in five games while posting career-high numbers in defensive actions.

Haaland averages 4.3 defensive interventions per game this season, significantly up from 2.8 last campaign. He has made two clearances per game compared to just 0.7 previously, demonstrating enhanced defensive awareness throughout matches.

The striker's touches in Manchester City's defensive half have increased from 5.6 to eight per 90 minutes. His overall distance covered per game has risen, while sprint numbers jumped from 18 every 90 minutes to nearly 30 this season.

Haaland maintains his prolific scoring rate with 91 goals in 102 Premier League games and 50 goals in 49 Champions League appearances. His consistent goal production now combines with significantly improved all-around contributions that have impressed critics.

"The penny is dropping," Roy Keane said after observing Haaland's progress. "He's a Championship player now," Keane added with a smile, upgrading his previous assessment.

Despite maintaining 24.6 touches per Premier League game, Haaland's positioning and involvement have shifted dramatically. His defensive actions represent the most significant statistical improvement, showing adaptation to Guardiola's tactical demands for complete striker play.

"Erling has been incredible since the start, but this season he is better than ever," Guardiola said.

The Manchester City striker has scored seven goals in six games across all competitions while posting career-best defensive numbers. His evolution from pure goalscorer to complete forward reflects tactical maturation under Guardiola's system.

Sergio Busquets To Retire At End Of Inter Miami Season

Sep 26, 2025 7:27 AM

Sergio Busquets has announced he will retire at the conclusion of the current MLS season with Inter Miami.

Busquets made his debut for Barcelona in 2008 after coming up through their La Masia youth academy. Busquets went on to make 722 appearances for the club while winning 32 trophies. Busquets also made 143 appearances for Spain as part of their World Cup winning team in 2010 and the European Championship in 2012.

“Thank you to everyone and to football for everything. You will always be a part of this beautiful story. These will be my final months on the pitch. I am retiring very happy and proud, fulfilled, and above all grateful.”

Busquets joined Inter Miami in 2023 where he reunited with Lionel Messi, Jordi Alba and Luis Suarez.

“The time has come to say goodbye to my career as a professional footballer,” Busquets said. “It has been almost 20 years of enjoying this incredible story that I have always dreamed of.

“Soccer has given me unique experiences, in wonderful places with the best companions. Thanks to FC Barcelona, the club of my life. There, I fulfilled my dreams of wearing the shirt I loved. Winning titles in moments at Camp Nou that I will never forget. Thanks to the Spanish national team. It was an honour to represent it so many times and to enjoy achievements that will always remain in my heart.”

Kylian Mbappe Shows Dramatic Defensive Improvement Under Xabi Alonso

Sep 25, 2025 2:32 PM

Kylian Mbappe has transformed his defensive workrate under new Real Madrid coach Xabi Alonso, making 2.5 ball recoveries per game compared to 1.06 last season.

The French forward scored twice in Madrid's 2-1 Champions League victory over Marseille, leading the team's high press in a performance that drew comparisons to Ballon d'Or winner Ousmane Dembele. Alonso has succeeded where former PSG coach Luis Enrique failed in convincing Mbappe to commit defensively.

Madrid's prospects this season depend heavily on Mbappe buying into Alonso's tactical philosophy. The striker has made 15 ball recoveries in six LaLiga games this season, significantly improving his off-ball contribution.

Mbappe leads LaLiga with seven goals in six matches, taking 34 shots and creating 48 shot-creating actions. He has also converted all four penalty attempts this season after struggling with three saved penalties last campaign.

"Xabi wants us to win the ball back more quickly," Mbappe said. "I do what the boss asks me to do. He wants a high block, to win the ball high up [the pitch] and then we can create chances."

The transformation addresses Madrid's defensive shortcomings from last season under Carlo Ancelotti. Madrid conceded 16 goals across four matches against Barcelona and lost 5-1 on aggregate to Arsenal in Champions League quarterfinals.

Goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois highlighted the tactical changes, noting that Alonso demands wingers and attacking midfielders track back quickly behind the ball. The approach will face its first major test Saturday in the Madrid derby against Atletico.

"The problem comes when you don't defend with 11 players," Courtois said after the Marseille match. "The boss is really on top of the wingers now."

Upcoming fixtures against Juventus, Barcelona, Liverpool and Manchester City will determine whether Mbappe's defensive improvement represents genuine tactical evolution under Alonso.

Liverpool's Patience Transforms Ryan Gravenberch Into Key Player

Sep 25, 2025 2:23 PM

Liverpool's long-term transfer strategy has proven successful with Ryan Gravenberch emerging as a championship-winning component after his struggles at Bayern Munich.

The Dutch midfielder was initially identified by Liverpool's data analysts in 2022 as one of Europe's three most promising midfielders alongside Aurelien Tchouameni and Jude Bellingham. Despite early interest, Gravenberch moved to Bayern Munich at age 20, where he struggled to establish himself during the 2022-23 season.

Liverpool maintained interest despite Gravenberch's difficult year in Germany. The club's recruitment philosophy focuses on player potential rather than immediate form, leading them to pursue the midfielder when other clubs overlooked him.

The Reds signed Gravenberch for significantly less than his original market value following his Bayern struggles. He spent his first season under Jurgen Klopp as a fringe squad member before emerging as a key player under new manager Arne Slot.

Gravenberch's transformation exemplifies Liverpool's approach of identifying talent early and maintaining conviction through temporary setbacks. The club previously applied similar patience with Federico Chiesa, first considering him in 2019 before eventually signing him five years later.

The midfielder has now become integral to Liverpool's championship-winning team, validating the club's long-term recruitment strategy. His development under Slot has allowed him more attacking freedom, fulfilling the potential Liverpool identified three years ago.

Liverpool's data-driven approach, supported by analysts including former CERN astrophysicists, continues to influence transfer strategies across European football.
