Liverpool suffered their sixth defeat in seven matches across all competitions as Crystal Palace eliminated them from the Carabao Cup with a 3-0 victory at Anfield, extending the defending Premier League champions' unprecedented slump under manager Arne Slot.
Slot made 10 changes from Saturday's loss to Brentford, resting senior players ahead of Saturday's crucial Premier League clash with Aston Villa. The heavily rotated side fell behind to two goals in four minutes from Ismaila Sarr before halftime.
Crystal Palace, fielding several first-team regulars, controlled the match after the break. Eighteen-year-old defender Amara Nallo received a straight red card 12 minutes after entering as a substitute for bringing down Justin Devenny on a breakaway. Yeremy Pino added a third goal late to confirm Palace's place in the quarter-finals.
The defeat marked Liverpool's fifth consecutive loss in domestic football. Their only victory in over a month came against Eintracht Frankfurt in the Champions League last week.
Slot defended his selection decisions in his post-match press conference, citing player fatigue and injury concerns.
"If I look at our result against Brentford, two days after Frankfurt away, I saw a team struggling to play three games in seven days," Slot said. "At this time, with only 15 players available in our squad, and to add to that, this club has always used this competition for academy players, it felt to me the right decision."
Liverpool employed a back three for the first time under Slot, matching Palace's 3-4-3 formation. The system worked initially but Palace adjusted before halftime, exploiting spaces created by dragging Liverpool's center-backs out of position.
Several young players received opportunities, including teenagers Rio Ngumoha, Trey Nyoni and debutant Kieran Morrison. Twenty-two-year-old Calvin Ramsay made his first senior appearance since November 2022.
Liverpool face Aston Villa at Anfield on Saturday, followed by Champions League matches against Real Madrid and a Premier League trip to Manchester City.
