Bukayo Saka Won't Need Surgery, Out Several Weeks

Aug 29, 2025 9:35 AM

Bukayo Saka is set to miss a “few weeks” with a hamstring injury but does not require surgery. Saka scored at the end of the first half before suffering the injury at the beginning of the second half in Arsenal's 5-0 win over Leeds.

Saka pulled up after playing a pass to Riccardo Calafiori on the edge of the box, before going down and being tended to by Arsenal’s medical staff.

Saka was out last season for three months due to a hamstring injury in his other leg that required surgery.

“Bukayo’s doing better but he will be out for a few weeks,” Arteta said.

“No surgery. It’s not as bad as the last one. I don’t know. Let’s see how he evolves.”

Xavi Simons Allowed By Leipzig To Go To London Amid Tottenham Interest

Aug 28, 2025 11:05 AM

RB Leipzig allowed Netherlands playmaker Xavi Simons to travel to London as Tottenham Hotspur pursue the 22-year-old before the September 1 transfer deadline. The German club seeks to resolve the midfielder's future amid Premier League interest.

Tottenham targets Simons to strengthen Thomas Frank's attacking options after missing out on Morgan Gibbs-White and Eberechi Eze. The club also lost James Maddison to an ACL injury that will sideline him for most of the season.

Chelsea have also expressed interest in Simons this summer. The Blues reached an agreement with AC Milan for Christopher Nkunku's transfer on Thursday, potentially creating space for additional attacking reinforcements.

Leipzig will excuse Simons from first-team duties for the remainder of the week if Premier League discussions become formal. This includes Saturday's match against Heidenheim at RB Arena following their 6-0 defeat to Bayern Munich.

The Bundesliga club remains adamant that Simons will not leave unless their asking price is met. If negotiations fail, they plan to quickly reintegrate him into the squad for weekend preparations.

Simons joined Leipzig permanently from Paris Saint-Germain for approximately $67 million in January despite expressing desire to leave in May. He recorded 11 goals and 8 assists in 33 appearances last season while missing 15 games due to ankle surgery.

The Athletic reported that clubs struggle to identify Simons' optimal role within their systems. Leipzig utilized him as a specialized number 10 that functions as both wide-forward and supporting striker.

His versatility has created uncertainty among potential buyers about his best position. This tactical ambiguity has delayed what was expected to be a straightforward summer transfer for one of Europe's most promising playmakers.

Simons has earned 28 caps for the Netherlands national team since debuting at age 19 under Louis van Gaal.

Ruben Amorim Demands Changes After United's Shocking Grimsby Cup Loss

Aug 27, 2025 9:54 PM

Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim declared "something has to change" after his team's stunning Carabao Cup defeat to fourth-tier Grimsby Town, losing 12-11 on penalties following a 2-2 draw. The Portuguese coach said his players "clearly showed what they want" with their performance.

Grimsby scored twice in eight first-half minutes through Charles Vernam and Tyrell Warren before United leveled through Bryan Mbeumo and Harry Maguire. The League Two side advanced after Matheus Cunha's penalty was saved and Mbeumo hit the post in the shootout.

"I think the players spoke really loudly about what they want today," Amorim told ITV Sport. "Something has to change and you're not going to change 22 players again."

The defeat represents a continuation of United's struggles after finishing 15th in the Premier League last season. Amorim described Grimsby as "the only team on the pitch" during his post-match interviews.

Amorim contemplated leaving Old Trafford in February due to frustration with performances and the working environment. He received assurances from chief executive Omar Berrada and technical director Jason Wilcox before deciding to stay.

Despite summer investment in new attackers, Amorim offered a damning assessment of his team's mentality against Grimsby. He repeatedly emphasized that his players had "spoken really loud" through their lacklustre performance.

"We started the game without any intensity, the idea of the pressure. We were completely lost, it is hard to explain," Amorim said on Sky Sports.

United have collected just one point from their opening two Premier League matches this season. The team returns to league action Saturday when they host Burnley at Old Trafford.

Amorim joined United from Sporting CP in November 2024 on a contract running through summer 2027 with an optional additional year.

Chelsea Close to $54M Garnacho Deal After Stepping Up United Talks

Aug 27, 2025 3:59 PM

Chelsea are nearing an agreement with Manchester United for Argentina forward Alejandro Garnacho in a deal worth approximately $54 million, according to ESPN sources. The 21-year-old has been told he can leave Old Trafford this summer.

Garnacho has not featured in Ruben Amorim's plans and was omitted from United's preseason tour to the United States. He trained with other unwanted players including Marcus Rashford, Jadon Sancho, and Antony during the summer preparations.

The winger rejected a move to Bayern Munich earlier this month, making it clear he preferred a transfer to Chelsea. United initially valued Garnacho at $67 million while Chelsea offered only $40 million, creating a significant gap in negotiations.

Chelsea's interest had stalled recently due to UEFA sanctions requiring the club to balance their books through player sales. The Conference League winners needed to offload key players including Christopher Nkunku and Nicolas Jackson to comply with financial regulations.

Negotiations have resumed between the clubs over a fee ranging from $47 million to $54 million. Sources indicate that while no agreement has been reached, talks are progressing positively ahead of next Monday's transfer deadline.

Garnacho expressed interest in joining Chelsea during the January transfer window, but no deal materialized at that time. The Argentine international has been training separately from Amorim's first-team squad alongside other players deemed surplus to requirements.

United have successfully moved Marcus Rashford to Barcelona on a season-long loan but have struggled to find buyers for their other unwanted assets. The club needs to generate funds through player sales to fund new acquisitions before the deadline.

The potential transfer represents a significant addition for Enzo Maresca's Chelsea squad as they look to strengthen their attacking options for the remainder of the season.

Ian Darke To Call 2026 World Cup For Fox

Aug 27, 2025 2:33 PM

Ian Darke will join Fox Sports as a play-by-play broadcaster during its coverage of the 2026 World Cup. Drake will be calling his ninth World Cup.

“I love the World Cup, and I think any soccer commentator would be lying to you if they said they didn’t want to do the World Cup regardless of the controversial venue. By hook or by crook, I have managed to get assigned,” Darke told The Athletic in 2022 upon getting the World Cup assignment from Fox.

The World Cup draw is currently scheduled to take place on Dec. 5 at The Kennedy Center. The opening match of the World Cup will take place on June 11th.

Christian Pulisic Recalled To USMNT Despite No Poch Summer Contact

Aug 26, 2025 10:22 PM

USMNT manager Mauricio Pochettino named Christian Pulisic to September's roster for friendlies against South Korea and Japan, marking the winger's first call-up since their public dispute over Gold Cup participation ended their communication in May.

Pochettino confirmed Tuesday he "didn't talk with" Pulisic this summer but declared their June back-and-forth "behind us." The manager said the focus shifts to moving forward with established plans for every player.

"We need to look forward. We have a plan for every single player, and the plan for Christian now is to call and to see him in this camp," Pochettino said via Zoom.

Pulisic skipped the summer's Concacaf Gold Cup after what U.S. Soccer called a "collective decision" following "thoughtful discussions." The AC Milan winger publicly defended himself against commitment questions, revealing he wanted to participate in pre-Gold Cup friendlies but was denied.

Notable absences include midfielder Weston McKennie, whose delayed offseason and uncertain Juventus status influenced Pochettino's decision. McKennie entered Juventus' season opener against Parma in the 89th minute after a truncated preseason due to Club World Cup participation.

"We already know Weston. It's not necessary to call him to know," Pochettino said. "We wanted to give him the possibility to be more settled in his club, and the possibility to be in his best form."

Pochettino also omitted Johnny Cardoso, citing the midfielder's recent transfer to Atletico Madrid from Real Betis as requiring adaptation time. The manager emphasized that "no one has their place sure" and "everyone needs to fight."

The September camp represents Pochettino's effort to balance player management with competitive preparation. He hinted that McKennie and other established players would likely return for October's roster, calling September "the last camp that we are going to bring some new faces."

Max Dowman Draws Lionel Messi Comps, Requires Special Protocols At 15

Aug 26, 2025 10:14 PM

Arsenal winger Max Dowman became the second-youngest player in Premier League history Saturday when he made his debut against Leeds United at 15 years and 234 days old. Only teammate Ethan Nwaneri holds the younger record for both Arsenal and the Premier League.

The teenager has trained with Arsenal's first team since age 14 and traveled to Dubai for the senior squad's warm-weather camp in January. His rapid development prompted calls from supporters to include him during Arsenal's injury-hit periods this season.

Manager Mikel Arteta has carefully managed Dowman's progression, monitoring his reactions to various situations including bench appearances and squad omissions. The club has implemented comprehensive safeguarding measures for the young player.

Special Protocols for Young Star

Arsenal requires Dowman to change in a separate room from teammates before training and matches due to his age. He joins the main changing room only for team talks delivered by Arteta and coaching staff.

A dedicated security team member stays close to Dowman during travel and matchdays. The youngster maintains built-in study time at the training ground as he enters Year 11, preparing for his GCSE examinations.

Declan Rice serves as one of Dowman's mentors, selected for his experience starting professional football at a young age. Rice frequently appears alongside Dowman during team travel.

Former Stars Praise Playing Style

Former Arsenal winger Theo Walcott drew comparisons between Dowman and Barcelona legend Lionel Messi after watching the teenager's debut performance.

"What's really fascinating is that [Arsenal manager] Mikel Arteta will allow him to do that because that's his strength," said Walcott, who spent 12 years at Arsenal after joining the club in 2006. "He carries the ball, he's quicker with the ball. He's like Messi. I remember playing against Messi - when he was off the ball he's not quick. Maybe it's because I was quicker than most. When he had the ball he would just glide past people, glide past me with ease. [Dowman's] got that, he's got the stop-start."

England legend Wayne Rooney expressed admiration for Dowman's achievement, noting the teenager broke into Premier League action even younger than Rooney's own record-setting debut.

"To play at that age in the Premier League is crazy," Wayne Rooney said. "I know I played when I was young, but I think he's like 150 days younger than I was or more. It's just refreshing to see a young lad get his opportunity, and, even though he's playing for Arsenal, every time he cuts inside you go 'shoot'. You want him to put it in the top corner."

International Recognition and Contract Rules

Dowman already represents England at youth level, becoming the youngest scorer in European Under-17 Championship history with his goal against Czech Republic in May. He can play in the Champions League without age restrictions under UEFA regulations.

FIFA rules prevent Dowman from signing a professional contract until age 17. Current scholars in his age group typically earn under $12,000 annually under scholarship agreements.

The debut marks a significant milestone in Dowman's development as Arsenal continues supporting his dual focus on football and education.

16-Year-Old Rio Ngumoha Liverpool's Youngest Goalscorer With Winner

Aug 26, 2025 9:56 PM

Liverpool teenager Rio Ngumoha scored a dramatic winner against Newcastle United to become the club's youngest goalscorer at 16 years and 361 days old, breaking Ben Woodburn's previous record of 17 years and 45 days.

Ngumoha entered Monday's match in the 96th minute with Liverpool level at 2-2 against Newcastle. The former Chelsea academy product swept home a first-time shot four minutes later to secure a 3-2 victory at St James' Park.

The teenager's historic goal eclipsed Woodburn's previous record set in a League Cup tie against Leeds United nearly nine years ago. Ngumoha's strike marked his Premier League debut after earlier appearances in the FA Cup this season.

Manager Arne Slot praised the teenager's composure and finishing ability despite his age. The Dutch coach has integrated Ngumoha into first-team preparations after impressive pre-season performances against Preston, Stoke, Milan, and other clubs.

"Rio can finish really well for his age. How firm his shot was — you don't see that often for a 16-year-old," Slot said after the match.

A tribunal will determine Liverpool's compensation payment to Chelsea following Ngumoha's summer 2024 transfer. The Professional Football Compensation Committee has yet to announce its decision regarding the fee structure.

Liverpool previously paid Fulham $5.8 million for Harvey Elliott in 2019 through similar tribunal proceedings. Chelsea are expected to seek comparable compensation given Ngumoha's potential and development at their academy.

"This is just the start now. He has to stay humble, but also enjoy it because these kinds of nights you can't take for granted," captain Virgil van Dijk told the teenager after the match.

Ngumoha will sign his first professional contract when he turns 17 on Friday, transitioning from his current scholar's agreement worth approximately $1,500 monthly.

London Clubs Gain Transfer Market Advantage Over Northern Rivals

Aug 26, 2025 1:09 PM

London-based Premier League clubs are increasingly attracting foreign players over northern rivals, with 74% of this summer's permanent signings being international players compared to just 11% in 1992-93, according to industry sources and transfer data.

Seven London clubs competed in the Premier League last season, marking a significant shift from the league's 1992 inception when only four capital-based teams participated. The Athletic reports that foreign players consistently express preferences for London destinations during transfer negotiations.

Geographic Shift Transforms League Composition

Northern clubs represented just five of the 20 Premier League teams last season, the lowest number since the league's 1992 rebranding. This contrasts sharply with the original Football League in 1888, which featured exclusively Midlands and northern clubs.

Transfer market sources indicate that London's appeal extends beyond football considerations. Young international players particularly favor the capital's nightlife and cultural offerings over quieter northern locations.

"You'll hear 'his preference is a London club' pretty often. Imagine if you're trying to sign a 20-year-old from South America, or Asia, to some of them, London basically is England," said a former Premier League sporting director.

Financial Benefits Drive Success

London clubs command four of Europe's top 17 revenue positions, with Arsenal, Chelsea, Tottenham and West Ham leveraging premium ticket prices and increased commercial appeal. The four most expensive Premier League season tickets are all sold by London-based clubs.

Newcastle United has notably struggled with this geographic disadvantage, recently losing target Joao Pedro to Chelsea after the Brazilian expressed his desire to live in London.

"He has always said to me that he really wants to live in London. So I think he will prioritize first what comes from London," Pedro's former Brighton teammate Igor Julio explained.

The trend appears likely to continue as foreign investment and international player recruitment remain central to Premier League operations.

The teams based in Los Angeles have similar advantages in both the NBA and MLB.

Kylian Mbappe Embraces Added Responsibilities With No. 10 Shirt

Aug 26, 2025 1:00 PM

Kylian Mbappe has responded positively to Xabi Alonso's challenge about the responsibilities of wearing Real Madrid's number 10 shirt, showing improved defensive work and leadership qualities alongside his continued goalscoring form.

Alonso warned Mbappe that inheriting Luka Modric's number came with behavioral and leadership expectations beyond commercial appeal. ESPN reports that 345,000 Mbappe number 10 shirts were immediately sold, generating millions for Adidas and underlining Madrid's commercial value.

Mbappe has scored three goals in two La Liga matches since switching from number 9. His brace in Sunday's 3-0 victory over Real Oviedo demonstrated both his scoring prowess and enhanced defensive contributions.

Defensive Improvements Noted

The French striker showed increased tracking back and defensive awareness against Oviedo, including a crucial tackle that launched a counterattack. Mbappe also intervened when Vinicius Junior appeared ready to confront officials, covering his teammate's mouth to prevent potential disciplinary action.

"You can see Kylian's on form, you can see he's engaged in what we're trying to do, his behavior and his desire to excel is infectious for the rest of the team," Alonso said after the victory.

Leadership Gestures Off the Pitch

Mbappe demonstrated leadership qualities beyond the field by giving his match-worn shirt to a young fan at halftime. He later provided his second-half shirt to an Oviedo player after Antonio Rudiger declined a shirt exchange.

"Personally I love it when I see him do those tracking runs, when he changes his position a little and he's helping us defend from the front," Alonso explained.

The 26-year-old acknowledged the shirt's significance while maintaining focus on team success over individual recognition. Mbappe had waited eight years to wear number 10 at club level, previously wearing it only twice for AS Monaco as it was worn by Neymar at Paris Saint-Germain before his arrival.
