Mikel Merino accused Moises Caicedo of a "horrible challenge" after the Chelsea midfielder received a red card during Sunday's 1-1 draw at Stamford Bridge. The Arsenal forward scored the second-half equalizer after being fouled by Caicedo in the 38th minute. The result kept Arsenal five points clear of Manchester City at the top of the Premier League table.
Referee Anthony Taylor sent off Caicedo following a VAR review of the challenge that caught Merino on the ankle. Merino required lengthy treatment but was able to continue playing. The Spain international said he immediately recognized the severity of the tackle.
"I felt my ankle go all the way, but luckily I have very mobile ankles and body," Merino told Sky Sports. "I wasn't concerned about my safety, but obviously I knew it was a horrible challenge and it was going to be a red card straightaway."
When asked if Caicedo had apologized after the incident, Merino responded "No. Nothing." The midfielder later told the BBC that the tackle was "harsh and a really tough one" befitting the intensity of a London derby. Trevoh Chalobah had given Chelsea the lead in the 48th minute before Merino's equalizer.
Referee Taylor issued seven yellow cards during the physical encounter. Merino emphasized the demanding nature of Premier League football and praised his team's mentality after the opposition was reduced to 10 men. Arsenal controlled possession but struggled to create clear chances against Chelsea's defense.
"This is a really tough stadium to come and take a point," Merino said. "The team showed good mentality. With 10 men, we could have had more patience with the ball."
The draw extended Arsenal's unbeaten run in the Premier League. Manager Mikel Arteta's side maintained their position at the summit with the point earned at Stamford Bridge.
