Mikel Merino Calls Moises Caicedo Challenge 'Horrible' After Draw

Nov 30, 2025 10:27 PM

Mikel Merino accused Moises Caicedo of a "horrible challenge" after the Chelsea midfielder received a red card during Sunday's 1-1 draw at Stamford Bridge. The Arsenal forward scored the second-half equalizer after being fouled by Caicedo in the 38th minute. The result kept Arsenal five points clear of Manchester City at the top of the Premier League table.

Referee Anthony Taylor sent off Caicedo following a VAR review of the challenge that caught Merino on the ankle. Merino required lengthy treatment but was able to continue playing. The Spain international said he immediately recognized the severity of the tackle.

"I felt my ankle go all the way, but luckily I have very mobile ankles and body," Merino told Sky Sports. "I wasn't concerned about my safety, but obviously I knew it was a horrible challenge and it was going to be a red card straightaway."

When asked if Caicedo had apologized after the incident, Merino responded "No. Nothing." The midfielder later told the BBC that the tackle was "harsh and a really tough one" befitting the intensity of a London derby. Trevoh Chalobah had given Chelsea the lead in the 48th minute before Merino's equalizer.

Referee Taylor issued seven yellow cards during the physical encounter. Merino emphasized the demanding nature of Premier League football and praised his team's mentality after the opposition was reduced to 10 men. Arsenal controlled possession but struggled to create clear chances against Chelsea's defense.

"This is a really tough stadium to come and take a point," Merino said. "The team showed good mentality. With 10 men, we could have had more patience with the ball."

The draw extended Arsenal's unbeaten run in the Premier League. Manager Mikel Arteta's side maintained their position at the summit with the point earned at Stamford Bridge.

Messi's Inter Miami Meets Muller's Vancouver In MLS Cup Championship

Nov 30, 2025 10:08 PM

Inter Miami will host the Vancouver Whitecaps in the MLS Cup 2025 final on Saturday at Chase Stadium. Miami defeated NYCFC 5-1 in the Eastern Conference final while Vancouver beat San Diego FC 3-1 in the Western Conference final. The match marks the first final appearance for both clubs and features Lionel Messi against Thomas Muller.

The contest is a rematch of the Concacaf Champions Cup semifinals, where Vancouver eliminated Miami 5-1 on aggregate. Both teams have taken vastly different paths to reach the championship match. The winner will hoist the Philip F. Anschutz Trophy on Saturday at 2:30 pm ET.

Managing owner Jorge Mas told The Athletic last week the team's message after beating FC Cincinnati was simple. "Two wins. That's what I told the team in the locker room: Dos mas," Mas said. "That's the goal."

Sergio Busquets and Jordi Alba will retire after the final, ending legendary careers that included multiple titles with Barcelona and Spain. Both players were excellent in Miami's semifinal victory over NYCFC, with Alba recording two assists and Busquets adding one. The 37-year-old Busquets won 32 trophies during 15 years at Barcelona, while the 36-year-old Alba claimed six La Liga titles and one Champions League.

Head coach Javier Mascherano acknowledged the emotional weight of their final match earlier in the playoff run. "Nobody says it. Nobody comments on it. But we know that now that we've entered the playoffs, it's like the flame is beginning to extinguish, no?" Mascherano said on Nov. 9.

Vancouver has posted the best season in franchise history under new head coach Jesper Sorensen. The Whitecaps won their fourth consecutive Canadian Championship and reached the Concacaf Champions Cup final. Muller joined in the summer and contributed 10 goal contributions in 541 regular season minutes. Vancouver has lost just one match in 16 games since Muller's debut.

Xabi Alonso Backs Real Madrid Recovery After 3rd Straight LaLiga Draw

Nov 30, 2025 10:06 PM

Xabi Alonso expressed confidence in Real Madrid's ability to turn their season around following a 1-1 draw at Girona on Sunday. The result marked Madrid's third consecutive draw in LaLiga and left them one point behind Barcelona at the top of the table. Alonso emphasized the long nature of the campaign despite growing concerns over the team's recent form.

"In the second half we improved, we had more chances," Alonso said in his post-match news conference. "We weren't clinical, to get the three points. But it's a very long season, and we have to keep going."

Madrid fell behind to Azzedine Ounahi's 45th-minute strike at Montilivi. Kylian Mbappe equalized from the penalty spot, but the visitors could not find a winner. The draw followed recent stalemates at Rayo Vallecano and Elche, plus a Champions League defeat at Liverpool.

Madrid started the season strongly with 10 wins in their first 11 league matches. November's struggles have raised questions about Alonso's project in his first season at the club. Barcelona will face fourth-placed Atletico Madrid on Tuesday with a chance to extend their lead.

Alonso defended his players' effort and dismissed criticism of the performance. He praised the team's response to falling behind and cited three or four clear scoring chances in the second half. The manager called for unity and self-criticism ahead of Wednesday's match at Athletic Club in Bilbao.

"There are different phases in a season," Alonso said on Sunday. "At the start [of the season], we were more consistent away from home."

Alonso also questioned why VAR did not review a potential penalty involving substitute Rodrygo. He described the incident as a decisive moment that could have changed the game's outcome. Madrid will look to end their winless run midweek in the Basque Country.

Liverpool's Arne Slot Says 'Not Worried' About Job Status

Nov 26, 2025 9:52 PM

Liverpool manager Arne Slot said he is "not worried" about his position at the club following Wednesday's 4-1 home defeat to PSV Eindhoven in the UEFA Champions League. The loss extended Liverpool's dismal run to nine defeats in their past 12 games across all competitions.

The Reds are currently 12th in the Premier League table and 13th in the Champions League standings. Slot faces mounting pressure to reverse Liverpool's alarming slide after three consecutive heavy defeats.

Slot acknowledged his responsibility for the team's struggles while emphasizing his focus remains on analysis and player development rather than job security concerns.

"I'm not worried. What I mean with that is that my focus is on other things than worrying about my own position," Slot said. "I try to analyze, try to help the players as much as I can and it's obvious that I don't do it in the way I did that last season."

Liverpool have now conceded three or more goals in three consecutive matches for the first time since September 1992. The team suffered 3-0 losses to Manchester City before the international break and Nottingham Forest on Saturday before Wednesday's PSV debacle.

When asked whether he feels the backing of Liverpool's ownership and executives, Slot indicated he maintains regular communication with club leadership.

"Yes, but not in a sense that they tell me every single minute: 'We support you, we support you, we support you,'" Slot said. "But we talk a lot if we are winning last season and if we're losing then they're helpful to me, to the team."

Slot added that he had not yet spoken with Liverpool hierarchy following the PSV defeat. The manager acknowledged he needs to improve his approach as the team's issues extend beyond individual errors.

"I think that's also something that comes from a team effort. So again, I need to do better and that's what I'm trying to do every single day to improve the team and that is where my main focus is," Slot said.

The crisis represents Liverpool's worst run of form in over three decades as the club faces an uncertain path forward.

Real Madrid United Amid Pressure as Mbappe's Four Goals In UCL Win

Nov 26, 2025 9:46 PM

Real Madrid manager Xabi Alonso emphasized team unity following Wednesday's 4-3 Champions League victory over Olympiacos, as Kylian Mbappe scored four goals to end a three-game winless streak that had intensified pressure on the club. The win came amid reports suggesting Alonso's relationship with key players was deteriorating.

Mbappe scored a seven-minute hat trick while Vinicius Junior provided two assists as Madrid moved to 12 points in the league phase. The victory followed a defeat at Liverpool and draws at Rayo Vallecano and Elche that had led to criticism of Alonso's tactics.

Alonso rejected suggestions of fractured relationships within the squad while acknowledging the challenging period. The manager stressed the importance of the victory for both qualification and restoring confidence.

"Today it was important to change the dynamic," Alonso told Movistar. "We're all united. We know it will be a long, demanding season. There will be all kinds of situations. There are moments that you have to endure."

Alonso's relationship with Vinicius has faced particular scrutiny after the Brazilian was benched four times this season. Vinicius reacted angrily to being substituted in El Clasico last month, though Alonso praised his performance and had a disallowed goal against Olympiacos.

Mbappe, whose hat trick was the second-fastest in Champions League history, echoed Alonso's message of unity. The French forward is now the top scorer in both LaLiga and the Champions League this season.

"I know people talk a lot on the outside. It's normal for people to talk when you play for Real Madrid," Mbappe told Movistar. "We have to protect the players, the coach, the staff. We're all in this together."

Alonso praised Mbappe's leadership beyond his goal-scoring exploits, calling his influence and intangible qualities "fundamental to make a team."

The victory consolidated Madrid's position in the top eight and provided crucial breathing room as they navigate mounting external pressure. Their strong position puts them on track for automatic qualification to the knockout rounds.

Enzo Maresca Warns Against Comparing Estevao To Messi, Ronaldo

Nov 26, 2025 9:44 PM

Chelsea's 18-year-old forward Estevao became the third teenager in Champions League history to score in his first three appearances, joining Kylian Mbappe and Erling Haaland, as the Blues demolished Barcelona 3-0 at Stamford Bridge on Tuesday. Manager Enzo Maresca warned against comparing the Brazilian sensation to Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo following his stunning second-half strike.

Estevao scored a sublime goal in the 55th minute, collecting Reece James' pass before dribbling past Pau Cubarsi and Ronald Araujo to fire into the net. His goal drew immediate comparisons to Messi in his prime, prompting Maresca to protect his young star from excessive pressure.

The goal marked Estevao's fifth for Chelsea since his summer arrival from Palmeiras. Only Mbappe and Haaland had previously scored in their first three Champions League appearances as teenagers, placing Estevao in elite company at just 18 years old.

Jules Kounde's 27th-minute own goal opened the scoring before Araujo's 44th-minute red card left Barcelona down to 10 men. Substitute Liam Delap added a third goal with 17 minutes remaining as Chelsea climbed to fifth in the table.

Maresca emphasized that both Estevao and Barcelona's Lamine Yamal need space to develop without comparisons to all-time greats. The Italian manager stressed the importance of allowing teenagers to enjoy their football without unrealistic expectations.

"Estevao needs to relax. He needs to enjoy, he needs [training] sessions. He needs to play football," Maresca said. "Him, Lamine, they are so young, 18, that if you start to talk about Messi, [Cristiano] Ronaldo, I think it is too much pressure for young boys like them."

Estevao expressed gratitude for the support he has received since joining Chelsea.

"It really was the perfect night. [My goal] was such a special moment for me in my career," Estevao said. "From the moment I arrived here, I felt such a connection with the fans."

Chelsea face Premier League leaders Arsenal at home on Sunday and could close the gap at the top to three points with a victory. Barcelona dropped to 15th place in the Champions League standings following their fourth defeat in six group stage matches.

Liverpool View Bayern's Michael Olise 'Dream' Target

Nov 26, 2025 9:02 AM

Liverpool consider Bayern Munich winger Michael Olise a "dream" transfer option for the future, but the Premier League champions have no plans to make an offer at this stage, according to Sky Sports Deutschland reporter Florian Plettenberg. Bayern are unwilling to negotiate for the 23-year-old France international, who has no release clause and shows no desire to leave Munich.

Plettenberg reported that Liverpool are currently focused on pursuing AFC Bournemouth's Antoine Semenyo instead. The Reds face significant barriers to acquiring Olise given Bayern's stance and the player's contentment in Germany.

Olise joined Bayern from Crystal Palace in 2024 and has thrived in the Bundesliga. The French winger has recorded six goals and six assists this season, earning a 7.84 Whoscored rating that ranks second in the Bundesliga behind only Bayern teammate Harry Kane.

Transfermarkt values Olise at €130 million, reflecting his rapid development since moving to Germany. The absence of a release clause in his Bayern contract gives Munich full control over any potential transfer discussions.

Liverpool's interest signals their long-term planning for attacking reinforcements and Olise is viewed as a perfect eventual replacement for Mo Salah on the right wing. However, Bayern's reluctance to entertain offers and Olise's satisfaction at the club make any deal highly unlikely in the near future.

The Premier League champions appear to have shifted their immediate focus to more attainable targets. Semenyo has emerged as a priority option as Liverpool assess their forward options for upcoming transfer windows.

Olise's performances have established him as one of the Bundesliga's most productive wide players this season. His combination of goals and creativity has made him integral to Bayern's attacking system under their current management.

Xabi Alonso Addresses Tensions After Vinicius Contract Reports

Nov 25, 2025 4:16 PM

Real Madrid head coach Xabi Alonso acknowledged that managing demanding personalities is essential to his role following reports of strained relationships with senior players. The Athletic reported Monday that Vinicius Junior informed the club he will not sign a new contract while tensions with Alonso persist.

Several first-team players have expressed dissatisfaction with Alonso's management style and changes implemented since his arrival from Bayer Leverkusen last summer. The former Madrid midfielder addressed the situation during Tuesday's pre-match press conference ahead of Wednesday's Champions League fixture against Olympiacos.

"Managing personalities, getting the best out of the players, making them feel as good as possible," Alonso said. "It's a process that has different ups and downs, which you have to know how to handle well, in any team and especially at Real Madrid."

The relationship between Alonso and Vinicius first deteriorated during the Club World Cup semi-final against Paris Saint-Germain in June. Alonso planned to bench the Brazilian forward before an injury to Trent Alexander-Arnold forced a change.

Vinicius started the match on the right wing rather than his preferred left side. Three sources with knowledge of the situation told The Athletic that Vinicius informed club president Florentino Perez of his contract stance last month.

The conversation occurred after Madrid's 2-1 El Clasico victory over Barcelona on October 26. Vinicius was visibly angry after being substituted during that match.

Following the Barcelona game, Vinicius issued a public apology on social media to fans, the club, teammates and Perez. Sources close to the player said Alonso's omission from the statement was deliberate.

Alonso defended his approach when asked whether players could undermine his authority. He emphasized the need for respect and connection with the squad.

"I've worked with great players and personalities, who are demanding," Alonso said. "Their reactions help them to be as good as they are. That's the luck of being at Madrid, you have players of this calibre."

Madrid currently sit atop La Liga during Alonso's debut season despite Sunday's draw with Elche. The Athletic reported notable internal reaction to that result.

Andres Iniesta Reveals Depression Battle During Peak Barcelona Era

Nov 25, 2025 3:23 PM

Andres Iniesta has disclosed he battled depression during his prime years at Barcelona, revealing the mental health struggles coincided with some of his greatest achievements. The retired midfielder told The Athletic his difficulties may have stemmed from the "traumatic" move to La Masia academy at age 12.

Iniesta, 41, retired from professional football in October 2024 after a decorated career. He won nine La Liga titles, four Champions Leagues with Barcelona and the 2010 World Cup with Spain.

The former midfielder said leaving his small village of Fuentealbilla at 12 years old left a lasting mark. Moving to Barcelona's famed youth academy hundreds of miles from home took a significant toll on his mental health.

"I was pretty much at rock bottom," Iniesta said. "I started to recover once I put myself in the hands of professionals and with a lot of dedication, a lot of hard work, overcoming bad moments, average moments, good moments."

Iniesta's depression worsened following the 2009 death of friend Dani Jarque. The Espanyol defender died suddenly of a heart attack at age 26 during preseason.

His iconic World Cup final goal in 2010 came during this difficult period. After scoring the winning goal against the Netherlands in extra time, Iniesta revealed a tribute message on his undershirt reading "Dani Jarque, always with us."

"At first, I found it very difficult to get through a football training session," Iniesta said. "It was very difficult, but I had the mindset to try, even if it was only a little, to go to training."

The midfielder credited professional help and support from many people for his recovery. He tried to ensure fans did not notice his struggles by continuing to play through the challenges.

Iniesta scored 57 goals in 674 Barcelona appearances and 13 goals in 131 Spain caps. He finished third in the 2010 Ballon d'Or voting behind teammates Lionel Messi and Xavi.

Harry Kane Calls Bayern Exit 'Very Unlikely' Despite Contract Clause

Nov 25, 2025 10:43 AM

Harry Kane has dismissed speculation about leaving Bayern Munich this summer, telling German media it is "very unlikely" he will depart despite a release clause in his contract. The England captain, who has scored 23 goals this season, said no clubs have contacted him about a potential transfer.

Kane's comments come amid reports linking him with Barcelona and questions about his long-term future in Munich. Speaking to Bild, the 32-year-old striker emphasized his contentment at Bayern, where his contract runs until June 2027.

"I'm really happy in Munich. You can see that in the way I'm playing," Kane said. "It's very unlikely that anything will change after this season."

Kane's contract includes a €65 million release clause that could become active in summer 2026. However, he would need to notify Bayern by the end of the upcoming winter transfer window to activate that option.

The striker said he has not held contract discussions with Bayern yet but expects talks in the coming months. He added that he is in "no rush" about his future, with the 2026 World Cup also on his mind.

"I'm sure I'll have talks with Bayern in the next few months, then we'll see what's best for the future," Kane said.

Bayern CEO Herbert Hainer expressed confidence about extending Kane's stay beyond 2027. He praised Kane's "incredibly high level" of performance and said the club has "a very, very good chance" of securing a new deal.

"I'm absolutely convinced that he's very, very happy in Munich," Hainer told Bild.

Kane has made five Champions League appearances this season, scoring five goals. His 23-goal tally across all competitions underscores his immediate impact since joining Bayern from Tottenham.
