PSG Signs Adrien Rabiot To Extension Through 2019

Oct 31, 2014 11:20 PM

Adrian Rabiot has signed an extension with Paris Saint-Germain through the 2019 season.

Rabiot was due to become a free agent at the end of the current season and had rejected a five-year deal in the summer.

Rabiot had been linked with a number of clubs around Europe, including Arsenal and Chelsea, and PSG president Nasser Al-Khelaifi had earlier confirmed to Le Parisien that talks had taken place with Roma before the close of the summer transfer window.

Rabiot is a product of PSG's academy.

"I am very happy to remain a player of Paris Saint-Germain, the club that made me the player I am today," he told the official PSG website. "I would like to thank the president, who kept discussions open in recent months and the sporting management for their support.

"It was here at Paris Saint-Germain that I grew up and enjoyed my first experiences as a player. The club's project is ambitious and I'm very proud to be a part of it for the coming years. Now I want to concentrate on my football, on my game and give my best for Paris Saint-Germain on the pitch and for the supporters."

Marco Reus Insists Future At Dormund Amid More Bayern Reports

Oct 31, 2014 2:06 PM

Marco Reus insists his future at Borussia Dortmund is the last of his concerns amid growing reports Bayern Munich are to activate a buy-out clause in his contract and sign him next summer.

Reus is contracted to Dortmund until 2017, but he could leave for a predetermined sum as Mario Götze did in 2013.

"Right now there is a lot of talk about my future," he wrote. "There is a lot of speculation and a lot being written, which is why I just wanted to tell you that at the moment other people seem to be giving are more consideration to my future than I am."

One of the latest reports was that Reus was going to meet with Bayern bosses this weekend to settle on terms.

"The only thing that is definitely correct is that we are on the way to Munich to collect points with Dortmund," Reus added. "Hopefully afterwards we will return home with three points for Dortmund."

Fixtures Of The Weekend: Bayern/Dortmund, United/City

Oct 31, 2014 1:58 PM

Borussia Dortmund at Bayern Munich (Saturday, 9:30 AM PST): With Dortmund in 15th place after a disastrous start to the Bundesliga season, this match doesn't have nearly the same set of circumstances as we were expecting when the schedule was released. Jürgen Klopp needs results as they are already 10 points out of the top-4 as Bayern, Gladbach and Hoffenheim have yet to lose, while Wofsburg is 5-2-2 with 17 points. Dortmund has played extremely well in the Champions League, but for some reason haven't been able to accomplish anything meeting their standards domestically other than a 3-1 win over Freiburg on Sept. 13 and a 3-2 win over Augsburg on Aug. 29.

Manchester United vs. Manchester City (Sunday, 5:30 AM PST): This Manchester derby is surprisingly a toss-up with David Silva out and City playing some really mediocre football of late after their 2-2 draw at CSKA in the Champions League, a 2-1 loss at West Ham and the shocking League Cup loss at home to Newcastle. Louis van Gaal's side is beginning to click a little bit and found their way into a last minute draw against a Diego Costa-less Chelsea. Wayne Rooney will also return from suspension and injury in this match. What were the odds back in May when City were winning the EPL and United was an unmitigated disaster that the latter would be the side you more expect to win the match?

Cantona: Bielsa Similar To Mourinho In Style, Character

Oct 31, 2014 12:06 PM

Eric Cantona says José Mourinho and current Marseille boss Marcelo Bielsa are very similar in their style and character.

Marseille currently sit at the summit of Ligue 1 with a four-point lead over champions Paris Saint-Germain, while Chelsea is unbeaten atop the Premier League.

"I do not support Marseille much, but I like Bielsa," ERic Cantona told France 2. "I think he has... character. He has a personality, charisma. He knows good football.

"He's a bit like Mourinho. I like all those guys. When there is a press conference with Bielsa or Mourinho, we know that something will happen.

"I like to hear them speak. I like that they call into question the opinions and questions of journalists."

Steven Gerrard Will Play In 15-16 Even If It Means Leaving Liverpool

Nov 1, 2014 2:16 PM

Steven Gerrard has played in 678 matches for Liverpool since his debut in 1998 and joined the club's youth team at the age of 7.

But at 34, Gerrard may not figure into the future plans of the club and he's committed to continuing his career next season.

“I will play beyond this season,” he said. “We will have to wait and see if that’s at Liverpool or somewhere else.”

Gerrard "will see what's out there" if Liverpool decides to cut ties.

Barça, United, Real Have Most Academy Players In Top Leagues

Oct 31, 2014 11:16 AM

Barcelona's academy La Masia has topped a new survey by the International Centre for Sports Studies (CIES) for having produced the most players currently plying their trade in a top tier major European league.

The study found there are currently 43 graduates from La Masia in the ‘big five’ of Spain’s La Liga, the English Premier League, German Bundesliga, Italian Serie A and French Ligue 1.

Manchester United came second in the study with 36 players developed, followed by Real Madrid (34), Olympique Lyon (33) and Paris St Germain (27).

Of Barcelona’s 43 graduates, 13 still play for the Catalan club and 30 ply their trade elsewhere, many achieving success at their new clubs.

La Liga sides Athletic Bilbao and Real Sociedad top the list of the clubs who currently employ homegrown players — with 15 apiece due to their emphasis on nurturing and promoting Basque talent. Athletic have also produced top players now elsewhere including Manchester United’s Ander Herrera, Bayern’s Javi Martinez and Juventus’ Fernando Llorente.

The research also found that Ligue 1 club squads contained the highest proportion of home-grown players [24.6 percent], followed by La Liga [20.4 percent], Bundesliga [16.4 percent], Premier League [13.9 percent] and Serie A [9.6 percent].

David Silva Out 3-4 Weeks With Knee Injury

Nov 1, 2014 2:16 PM

David Silva will miss three to four weeks with a knee ligament injury he suffered in Manchester City's League Cup match against Newcastle.

Silva underwent a scan on Thursday after limping off after just nine minutes of City's 2-0 defeat.

Silva will now miss some crucial games including Sunday's derby against Manchester United as well as the midweek Champions League clash against CSKA Moscow.

"David has a problem in his ligament," the City boss told reporters. "Maybe he will be out around three or four weeks so he will not be available for the derby.

"David is a very important player but we have a squad and we will have to replace him with another player."

EPL Pays Players 22 Times More Than MLS

Oct 30, 2014 7:58 PM

Toronto FC did not reach the playoffs despite having the highest player wages bill in the MLS at nearly $17 million.

On the MLS 2014 salary list are 572 players earning total wages of just over $129.5 million.

Their total wage bills combined equals about the same as the wage bill for Queens Park Rangers ($126 million) in 2012-13, the most recent year’s data available for QPR.

In 2012-13, six Premier League clubs each had wages bills well in excess of the entire MLS, with Manchester City topping the list at $376 million (for all club staff). The wage bills for the top 20 clubs in England were almost $2.9 billion combined.

Mandžukić: Guardiola Didn't Treat Me With Respect

Oct 30, 2014 7:33 PM

In Marti Perarnau’s recent book, ‘Pep Confidential’ it was clear that Mario Mandžukić was one player who didn’t have the same relationship with Pep Guardiola as the other Bayern Munich players.

In the book, it is clear that whilst the likes of captain Philip Lahm bought into the Spanish managers philosophy in the way Xavi and Andres Iniesta did at Barcelona, Guardiola found Mandžukić a difficult character in much the same way as he found Zlatan Ibrahimovic a challenging prospect.

Now, Mandžukić has responded to Guardiola by labelling him "direspectful" and claiming he "deserved better."

In an interview with Sportske Novosti, the striker claimed "Guardiola disappointed me because he didn’t treat me with respect and it was twice as good when Jupp Heynckes (Bayern coach’s before Guardiola) until was there."
