Hazard: Chelsea Not Made To Play Football

May 1, 2014 1:53 PM

Chelsea fell 3-1 to Atlético Madrid in the Champions League Semifinal after taking an early lead with a Fernando Torres goal.

Eden Hazard didn't appear to be at full healthy, but he spoke more existentially about Chelsea's tactics as he goes into a summer with an uncertain future at Stamford Bridge.

"I don't know what we lacked," Hazard told beIN Sport. "After scoring, we had the game in our hands. Maybe they wanted it more than we did... It was an intense game. Beautiful to watch with opportunities.

"I'm sad but logic has been respected because they deserved to qualify.

"Chelsea is not made to play football. We're good on the counter, a little bit like Real against Bayern.

"We did it well tonight since we scored. But their goal hurt us before the break. We failed to make the difference in the second half.

"Often, I'm asked to do it all by myself and it's not easy. It was a complicated game. It will be a lesson for us regarding next year."

Hazard has been linked to Paris Saint-Germain and he previously told the media that he would have to consider a move if his wife insisted upon it.

Ronaldo: Ancelotti Changed Everything, Mentality Of Players

Apr 29, 2014 8:37 PM

Real Madrid has advanced to the Champions League final in the first season of Carlo Ancelotti's tenure as manager.

Ancelotti replaced José Mourinho, who led Real to the semifinals in 2011, 2012 and 2013.

“Ancelotti deserves all the credit," said Cristiano Ronaldo. He’s changed everything. He’s changed the mentality of the players.

“Scoring four goals on the road against Bayern isn’t easy. The team played very well. We are elated, I have to congratulate the team, who are very close. The team is playing in the best possible way and things got easier. The team was phenomenal. We are in the final, which is what we wanted.

“We’ve been searching for this for a long time. We are now in the final and deservedly so. We have to keep out heads up with both feet on the ground.”

Mourinho Dismisses Criticism From 'Philosophers'

Apr 30, 2014 11:07 AM

José Mourinho defended his tactics, which have been criticized in the media as merely "parking the bus" to achieve results for Chelsea.

Chelsea defeated Liverpool 2-0 during the weekend despite only moving forward in counterattack.

"At this moment, football is full of philosophers," Mourinho said. "People who understand much more than me. People with fantastic theories and philosophies. It's amazing. But the reality is always the reality. A team that doesn't defend well doesn't have many chances to win. A team that doesn't score lots of goals, if they concede lots of goals, is in trouble. A team without balance is not a team.

"I remember in my first period here, if you have a goalkeeper like Petr Cech who puts the ball in the opponents' box, and a striker like Didier Drogba who wins everything in the air, why play short? Because you are stupid?

"If your opponents are very fast on the counter and want space behind your defensive line, if you give them that space you are stupid. So when a team plays strategically and [a manager] thinks about his team and the qualities of the opponent … 10 years ago, 20 years ago, 30 years ago, 'good teams, intelligent teams'. In this moment – depending on the coach and the club obviously – the critics speak."

Bayern Keeping More Possession, Not Scoring On Set Pieces

Apr 29, 2014 11:03 AM

Bayern Munich had 54.4 percent possession in the Champions League last season, a figure that dropped to just 48.6 percent in the knockout stages against Arsenal, Juventus and Barcelona.

This season, Bayern has had possession 69.6 percent of the time and that number increased to 72 percent at Real Madrid on Wednesday.

Last season, Bayern scored eight goals from set pieces while they haven't scored a single goal this season in set pieces.

Possession statistics can be an unreliable indicator of performance. Since 2009-10, for instance, the team with the most possession has won only 63 of 142 Champions League knockout matches – a win percentage of 44% – with 26 draws and 53 defeats.

As the Prozone analyst Omar Chaudhuri succinctly puts it, goals predict changes in possession much better than possession predicts changes in goals.

When Bayern is at their best, they blend possession with pace.

Rodgers: Chelsea's Defensive Tactics, Not Nerves Produced Loss

Apr 27, 2014 1:32 PM

José Mourinho's defensive tactics produced a 2-0 win for Chelsea over Liverpool.

Assessing Chelsea's tactics, Brendan Rodgers said: "José's happy to work that way, to play that way, and he'll probably shove his CV in front of me and say it works, but it's not my way of working.

"I like to take the initiative in games, try to dominate and let players express themselves.

"Our game is based on (being) offensive, being creative, as opposed to stopping."

Rodgers rejected suggestions that nerves had played a part in Liverpool's defeat, with the club seeking a first league title since 1990.

"It (Chelsea's approach) is a defensive style, the polar opposite to how we work, and hopefully over time our offensive mentality and aggression will get us long-term results," he added.

"It's not difficult to coach to put 10 players right on your 18-yard box but it's much harder to try and break through it and they defended it well.

"We were the team that wanted to win the game. It was difficult because they played with a back six right from the off.

"We found it difficult to break them down, but it wasn't nerves. It was just that final ball and maybe that bit of luck that we needed so we're obviously disappointed with the result."

Guardiola Seeking Balance Between Tiki-Taka, German Football Culture

Apr 25, 2014 8:13 PM

Pep Guardiola has heard criticism that Bayern Munich has become too possession-obsessed with their tiki-taka tactics following their 1-0 loss at Real Madrid in the first leg of their Champions League tie.

"I know that my philosophy is different from the typical German one," he told reporters on Friday. "But Bayern wanted me because of my style.

"I've won a titles here too now - we won the Bundesliga in March, for example - so I believe that we are not so bad.

"We must keep the passion we offered in Madrid. We have to react, though, as we are 1-0 behind. We need to attack more and I need to find a balance between my ideas and the footballing culture in Germany."

Giggs To Bring Back 'The Manchester United Philosophy'

Apr 25, 2014 8:14 PM

Ryan Giggs will bring back "the Manchester United philosophy" as interim manager of the club.

Giggs was a member of entertaining attacking sides during the tenure of Alex Ferguson and said he favors a positive brand of soccer.

“It is going to be my philosophy,” he told his first news conference in charge.  “It’s going to be Manchester United’s philosophy because I have been here all my career. I want the players to play with passion, tempo, be brave, imagination, all the things I expect of a Manchester United player. Work hard, but most of all enjoy it. As a player I know if I am enjoying the game, I can express myself more.”

United are only seventh and are certain to record their lowest finish in the Premier League era and Giggs insisted the players have to share the blame with the sacked Moyes.

“I think everyone shares responsibility,” he explained. “You win together and you lose together. Everyone involved this season hasn’t been to the standards of Manchester United. It’s as simple as that.”

Suárez Surprised Liverpool In This Position With So Little Investment

Apr 25, 2014 11:21 AM

Luis Suárez is surprised by Liverpool's performance this season going from 7th to 1st without investing heavily in transfers.

"[Winning the title] would be something that no one would believe," the Uruguayan told Perform. "Because we have good players but if you look at the complete roster, we don't have [the players] to be up there. The truth is that we are surprised ourselves at how well we're playing.

"We have good players who are demonstrating why they are in Liverpool and it would be something amazing even to England because of the investment made by Chelsea, [Manchester] City and Arsenal.

"Even Tottenham have spent over €120m and we, with so little investment, are in that position. It would be incredible."

United Was As Lucky As Good In Ferguson's Final Season

Apr 23, 2014 7:11 PM

Alex Ferguson had become more lucky as manager of Manchester United during his final season despite winning the Premier League, making the job of David Moyes more difficult.

United ranked eighth in the Premier League in proportion of shots and seventh in proportion of shots on target last season. United, however, led the league in shooting percentage and fourth in save percentage. The performance didn't predict continued success in 13-14.

United won the league by 11 points over Manchester City last season. It also had 12 more points than expected based on its goals scored and allowed.

This season, it's getting about as many points as expected based on goal differential.
