Juventus Fires Massimiliano Allegri As Manager

May 17, 2024 3:35 PM

Juventus has fired Massimiliano Allegri following his "certain behaviors" at the Coppa Italia final, which were deemed "incompatible with the values of Juventus."

Allegri return to Juventus in 2021.

Allegri was sent off late into stoppage-time after furiously removing his jacket and confronting the fourth official before being given his marching orders on the touchline.

In a statement on the club website Juventus said: “Juventus announces that it has relieved Massimiliano Allegri of his role as coach of the men’s first team. The dismissal follows certain behaviors during and after the Italian Cup final which the club deemed incompatible with the values of Juventus and with the behavior that those who represent it must adopt.

“A period of collaboration ends, which began in 2014, restarted in 2021 and ended after the last three seasons together with the Italian Cup Final. The company wishes Massimiliano Allegri good luck in his future projects.”

Thiago Motta is a target for Juventus as his replacement.

Barcelona Considering Firing Xavi

May 17, 2024 3:32 PM

Barcelona is again debating the possibility of parting ways with Xavi as manager. Xavi announced earlier in the season that he would leave at the end of the season, but the two sides recently reversed course.

There is reportedly tension between Xavi and president Joan Laporta. There are several internal and external pressures pushing for Barcelona to fire Xavi.

Sources insist Laporta never trusted Xavi and part of their decision to keep him was a lack of available alternatives to replace him.

Phil Foden Named FWA Footballer of the Year

May 17, 2024 3:27 PM

Phil Foden has been named the Football Writers’ Association’s Footballer of the Year.

Foden beat out Declan Rice and Rodri to win 42 percent of the vote.

Foden ranked third in WhoScored rating in the Premier League behind Bukayo Saka and Rodri. Foden enters the final match of the season with 17 goals and eight assists.

“We’re still in two competitions, we’ve got two finals left and we’ll give everything to try and achieve success and try and do the Premier League four times which has never been done before," said Foden.

“It would mean a lot to us. It’s history and I don’t think I can ever see it being done again."

Foden joined City at Under-9 level.

“I’m so happy for people who have been on my journey, the fans who have supported me, those who have helped me and to be named for this award means a lot to me," Foden said.

“It just shows how far I’ve come, looking at my journey, and showing it’s possible for other kids. It does feel a little bit extra special for me as a kid to come through the academy and now playing with world stars. I’m getting the rewards that I’ve worked so hard for.”
