Adam Lallana 'Has Skills Of Iniesta, Xavi, Fabregas'

Mar 31, 2014 12:45 PM

Adam Lallana has 10 goals and eight assists in the Premier League this season for Southampton.

Mauricio Pochettino believes Lallana is one of the best midfielders in the world and he has possibly earned a spot on Roy Hodgson's England squad for the World Cup.

"We haven't seen a player like that in this country for a long time," Pochettino told reporters.

"Lately he has had a number of opportunities to get into the England national side so that is a very good thing for him.

"I am always telling him that he has the characteristics of a Spanish player and he has the skills of an [Andres] Iniesta, Xavi or [Cesc] Fabregas."

Moyes: We'll Try To Exploit Bayern's 'Little Bits Of Weakness'

Mar 30, 2014 1:27 PM

Manchester United has a difficult draw in facing Bayern Munich in the first leg of the Champions League quarterfinals on Tuesday.

"When we drew them, I felt we'd drawn probably the best team in Europe at this present time," said David Moyes. "I think most people would agree with that.

"I really enjoyed watching them last year as they have great energy. I quite enjoy German football actually and going to the games but Munich are a little bit of a class above the other teams, including Borussia Dortmund.

"We have got a really tough game and know exactly what we are going to get but we'll try to exploit little bits of weaknesses they have got. Pep (Guardiola) has taken over a really good team and added a bit himself with his own style. They have already won the Bundesliga quite comfortably so the focus is on the Champions League now."

Wenger Puts Missing Out On Yaya Toure At Top Of List Of Regrets

Mar 28, 2014 3:07 PM

Arsène Wenger spoke about why Arsenal missed out on signing Yaya Toure after having him on trial in 2003.

Toure will visit the Emirates on Saturday with Manchester City.

“It would be up at the top [of my list of regrets],” Wenger said. “But let's not forget that Yaya Toure had an agreement with us - and it's not because we did not want to sign him that he went to Ukraine.

“We needed to wait for his passport in Belgium. We have made mistakes but he is not a mistake, it's just the fact that he preferred to go to Metalurh Donetsk. He could go there without any passport.”

Toure has scored 21 goals in 42 appearances in all competitions this season.

Rodgers: Liverpool's Objective Is Sustainable Success

Mar 28, 2014 2:46 PM

Brendan Rodgers refuted comments from Tottenham's Tim Sherwood that Liverpool is feeling the pressure of the title race.

Liverpool is currently in second place in the Premier League with 68 points, though Manchester City is two points behind with two matches in hand.

The two clubs will meet on Sunday.

"We're very relaxed," said Rodgers.

"We're focused. There was no expectation on us being where we are, so there's certainly no pressure."

Rodgers also hit back at Sherwood's Tottenham side.

"I suppose the likes of Tottenham are a team who were maybe looking to be challenging for the league this season. You spend £100m-odd - it's a group that's set up to challenge," said Rodgers.

"We're looking to make sustainable success. That's our objective. We're looking to build something here."

Liverpool leads the EPL in goals with 84.

Martínez To Have £20M Transfer Fund To Build Everton In Summer

Mar 27, 2014 9:31 PM

Everton will have a £20 million-plus transfer fund for Roberto Martínez to upgrade the roster.

Martínez also wants to increase the number of hours players spend in training by building overnight accommodation at Finch Farm.

Martínez has sold £40 million-worth of players since his arrival from Wigan Athletic – Marouane Fellaini, Nikica Jelavic and Victor Anichebe – and also removed John Heitinga's lucrative salary from the wage bill. Almost half has been reinvested on James McCarthy, Arouna Koné and Aiden McGeady.

Signing Romelu Lukaku on a permanent basis from Chelsea is a high priority, as is a return for Jack Rodwell.

"We've got money to spend this summer," said Martínez. "Remember we sold £40 million worth of players and we only spent £13 million [initially]. That money is there to be spent. The new TV money won't make a massive difference on the playing side because we've got a lot of things we want to do on the training ground. We want to build accommodation here, have bedrooms on site, put a new pitch in and give the training ground a big lift. I'm going to use the money for that."

Asked why he wants players sleeping at Finch Farm, Martínez said: "Because you can work. Young players especially, any player under 24, needs to have the right balance of training and recovery. The moment you lose a player to injury and he has to go home to recover and come back, it makes it impossible to get two sessions in. You have to have that base to work if you want to invest in youngsters.

"The 10,000 hours rule [the supposed time required to become expert in any field] is impossible but if you can get a player doing double of what they do the benefits are incredible. Even before games you have to go to a hotel. You don't create that environment of feeling at home. It is now a must to have bedrooms. Every first-team player should have a bedroom."

Martínez also said that the transfer budget could be determined by whether they're in Europe in which depth is more critical.

Barcelona Could Spend As Much As €120M In Summer

Mar 27, 2014 12:33 PM

Barcelona could have 120 million euros to spend in a major squad reorganization this summer, club president Josep Maria Bartomeu said.

Barcelona needs replacements for Victor Valdes at goalkeeper and Carles Puyol at central defense.

It is not clear how many players would be acquired.

“At the moment I do not know how many players we will sign,” Bartomeu said. “Two for sure and the rest we will see about. If they ask us we could dedicate 120 million euros to signings and stretch out the syndicated loan a year.”
