Lionel Messi Has Become More Of A Playmaker In Recent Seasons

Sep 28, 2016 12:02 PM

A larger percentage of Lionel Messi's output has been converted into assists over the past few seasons.

In 2012-13, they consisted of 26 percent of his goal involvements. That number has since grown to 41 percent and 42 percent before jumping to 62 percent last season.

Messi moved back out to the right-wing midway through Luis Suarez's first season with Barcelona.

Messi's general involvement remains consistent, passing with a similar frequency now as he was as a false nine and his dribbling statistics are similar.

Messi starts out wide before cutting inside now and most of his passes therefore still take place in the center but in a deeper position.

Long passes made up 5.5 percent of his overall passes in 2012-13 but have grown to 6.7 in 2014-15 and 9.7 in 2015-16.

Messi's through balls have increased, going from 1.76 per 90 in 12-13 to 2.41 in 14-15 and 2.23 in 15-16, which is the highest average of any regular starter in Europe's top five leagues. Messi's completion rate even improved while his attempt rate increased.

Messi's goal-scoring has decreased slightly from 1.10 goals per 90 minutes in 14-15 to 0.83 in 15-16.

Neymar: Messi, Suarez & I Know How Each Other Think

Sep 14, 2016 8:08 PM

Neymar said his playing relationship with Lionel Messi and Luis Suarez is almost telepathic.

"It was special for the three of us to play together for the first time this season and we are very pleased with our performance," said Neymar.

"We are at a place now where we know the way each other thinks, the runs we make, the positions we will be in. We can still get better though, our communication and understanding of each other is improving all the time.

"We are not playing for ourselves, nobody is looking for personal glory. It is always nice to score goals, but if I score, if Luis scores, if Leo scores, it doesn't matter - we are as happy creating goals for each other as scoring them.

"Our understanding on the field is helped by our relationship off it. We are all good friends, and I think that shows in the way we play. It is very early in the season, we can get better, and help make it a very successful season for Barcelona."

David Luiz Prepared To Play Anywhere For Antonio Conte

Sep 7, 2016 11:38 AM

David Luiz is prepared to play anywhere he's requested by Antonio Conte.

Luiz is rejoining Chelsea after two seasons at Paris Saint-Germain.

"It doesn't matter where [I play], I want to help and when I am in the team I am there to try to help," he told the club's official website.

"The coach is an amazing coach, he understands a lot of tactical things and I know he chooses every match the best lineup, so if he needs to play three, four or two [at the back], it doesn't matter. I am there if he wants me to play. In different positions I am available."

Luiz is naturally a center back but he's also played as a defensive midfielder.

Luiz could fit well in Conte's three-man backline.

EPL Clubs Spend Record $1.55 Billion On Transfers During Summer

Sep 2, 2016 11:09 AM

Premier League clubs spent a record £1.165 billion ($1.55 billion) during the 2016 summer transfer window.

Thirteen clubs broke their own transfer records as they continue to benefit from a £5.1 billion television deal.

"The increases in broadcast revenue, with the 2016-17 season being the first of the new broadcast deal cycle, is the principal driver of this spending power," said Dan Jones, a partner at financial analyst Deloitte.

The average gross spend for a Premier League club in the 2016 summer window was about £60 million.

Paul Pogba was the most expensive player of the window as he was bought by Manchester United for £89 million. United and Manchester City each spent more than £150 million in the window.
