Arsene Wenger Finds Transfer Market 'Quite Scary'

Jul 30, 2016 8:35 PM

Arsene Wenger has railed at the transfer spend of some of his rivals this summer. Wenger believes Arsenal has a talented enough team to compete for their first Premier League title in 12 seasons.

“I personally believe that no matter what you do, it’s never enough. In the Premier League, every club is hugely ambitious. With the cheques that everybody signs, it’s quite scary. But I believe we know what we have to do.”

Of the quick turnaround Wenger said: “It’s tough for us. We are in a very hard training programme at the moment, so you never know how tired the players are when you go into the games. But it was good to see that we were in good shape. We’ve had two hard days in our training sessions just before we played today, and it was good to see that everybody did well.”

Carlo Ancelotti Won't Overhaul Bayern's Style Of Play

Jul 11, 2016 12:04 PM

Carlo Ancelotti was introduced as manager of Bayern Munich on Monday, taking over for Pep Guardiola.

“I’m very happy and proud to be here and I want to thank Bayern for this,” Ancelotti said at the Allianz Arena, addressing the media in German.

“I feel very good because I’m at one of the best clubs in the world, but I am looking forward to the start of a new season. I think my friend Guardiola did excellent work in recent years. We have a fantastic team and I’m delighted, and we will try to be strong in all competitions and to win. A new season starts today and I hope for this club and for all Bayern fans that this will be a great season.”

Ancelotti said he did not plan on overhauling the club’s style of play. “I know very well that the style of Bayern Munich is to play attacking football and we want to play attacking football,” he said. “I love to play attacking football. We have a fantastic squad and I’m really happy about this. We’ve signed some fantastic players this summer.

“I’m not here to make a revolution because the job that Guardiola did here was fantastic and I would like to follow his style. I don’t think our style is going to change a lot compared to last year. The system will be more or less the same.”

Mourinho Prefers 'Specialists' Over 'Multi-Functional' Players

Jul 5, 2016 7:54 PM

Jose Mourinho spoke about the types of players he's looking to sign with Manchester United.

"I can try to make you understand the profile. We made a nucleus of four priorities, four positions, to give a certain balance to the squad," said Mourinho.

"To give a certain push in terms of the qualities I need and want. As you know, the ones with more vision. I am more a manager that likes specialists rather than multi-functional players because I am clear in my approach. Multi-functional players – you need one or two if you have three central defenders injured. But, basically, I want specialists. We decided four targets. We have three at the moment. Until we don’t have the fourth, we are still working hard. Myself, the structure, Mr Woodward, the owners. When we have the fourth we will breathe. The market will be open. We will get the fourth before 31 August, and we will be stable but the market will be open.”

Mourinho Rules Out Using Wayne Rooney In Midfield

Jul 6, 2016 12:41 PM

Jose Mourinho will not use Wayne Rooney in midfield with Manchester United.

Rooney had been used in a deeper midfield role last season with United as well as at Euro 2016 with England.

"There are many jobs on the field. The most difficult to find is one to put the ball in the net," he said. "It is normal that a player at his age will change a little bit.

"One thing that will never change is his natural appetite to put the ball in the net. Maybe he is not a striker, not a No. 9 anymore. But with me he will never be a No. 6, playing 50m from goal.

"Yes, his passing is amazing but mine is also amazing without pressure. Many players have a great pass, but to put the ball in the net is the most difficult. He will be a No. 9, a No. 10, a No. 9.5, but never a No. 6 or a No. 8."
