FIFA Looking To Financially Assist Clubs Affected By COVID-19 Pandemic

Mar 31, 2020 2:18 PM

FIFA released a statement saying they were looking to financially assist clubs hard-hit by a lack of matches due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

FIFA reportedly have a financial reserve of $2.745 billion.

"FIFA is in a strong financial situation and it's our duty to do the utmost to help them in their hour of need," said the organization. "FIFA is working on possibilities to provide assistance to the football community around the world after making a comprehensive assessment of the financial impact this pandemic will have on football."

The organization is also looking to create a program that would provide a financial lifeline for its member clubs.

"The football community around the world is experiencing, to a greater or lesser extent, serious financial problems on account of the coronavirus outbreak," FIFA said. "This threatens to disrupt and impair the ability of FIFA's member associations and other football organizations such as leagues and clubs to develop, finance and run football activities at all levels of the game, including professional, non-professional, youth and grassroots."

Tottenham Announce Wage Cuts For Non-Playing Staff

Mar 31, 2020 1:56 PM

Tottenham will cut wages for its non-playing staff, with chairman Daniel Levy suggesting that players may be expected to sacrifice their wages in the future.

"When I read or hear stories about player transfers this summer like nothing has happened, people need to wake up to the enormity of what is happening around us," the club released in a statement. "With over 786,000 infected, nearly 38,000 deaths and large segments of the world in lockdown we need to realise that football cannot operate in a bubble.

"We maybe the eighth largest Club in the world by revenue according to the Deloitte survey but all that historical data is totally irrelevant as this virus has no boundaries."

Barcelona, Juventus, and Borussia Dortmund recently announced that players will reduce their wages during the pandemic.

The Premier League has been suspended til at least April 30th.

Lionel Messi Hits Out At Board After Barcelona Players Take Wage Cut

Mar 30, 2020 12:30 PM

Lionel Messi hit out at the Barcelona board after players officially agreed to take a 70% pay cut, saying he wasn't surprised that the higher ups would pressure the players through the media to do something they had already planned on.

"We want to clarify that our desire has always been for a reduction to be applied to our salaries because we understand that this is an exceptional situation and we are the first that have ALWAYS helped the club with what they have asked of us," released Messi in a statement.

"It doesn't cease to surprise us that from inside the club there would be people that want to put us under a magnifying glass or try to pressure us into something that we were always clear we wanted to do. In fact, if the agreement has dragged on, it's because we were looking for a formula to help the club and its workers in these difficult times.

"For our part, the moment has arrived to announce that, aside from the 70% wage cut during the State of Emergency, we are going to also make contributions so that all the club's employees can earn 100% of their salaries for as long as this situation lasts," wrote Messi.

The wage cut, which affects all sports across Barcelona, ensures that the club's staff will be paid their full wages.

Barcelona are owned by its members, with no outside investments, leading to fears that a stoppage in play could have severe repercussions within the club.

Several Premier League Clubs Want To End Season Immediately

Mar 27, 2020 2:13 PM

Several Premier League sides are looking to end the 2019-20 season with immediate effect, with an eye towards replaying the entire season.

One source told The Athletic that it would be morally wrong to restart the season considering the current COVID-19 pandemic.

“We run a game. No more, no less. There is no place for sport at the moment," said the source.

Should the season be canceled, Liverpool would be denied their first Premier League title in 30 years.

Premier League sides committed to finishing the season in a meeting last week, though many are developing strong reservations due to the growing pandemic.

Liverpool To Complete 2019-20 Season Wearing New Balance Jerseys

Mar 28, 2020 2:02 PM

Liverpool will complete the 2019-20 season while wearing New Balance jerseys.

Nike was set to takeover Liverpool's kits on June 1st, 2020. Liverpool, Nike, and New Balance chose to hold off on the transfer until this season is complete.

Nike did not want to appear as if they were profiting from the COVID-19 pandemic.

“Legally, it could have been enforced as the contract clearly states the date of June 1. But it was decided that it just wouldn’t have been right to storm in and take over. Things have been very cordial.

“It was always the plan that Liverpool would start wearing Nike in pre-season ahead of the 2020-21 season and that remains the case. It’s only right that they see out the rest of this season in New Balance. We’re very much focused on next season," sources told The Athletic.

Barcelona Players Agree To Wage Cut During League Suspension

Mar 27, 2020 12:23 PM

Barcelona players agreed to cut their wages while La Liga is suspended due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The club is facing millions of dollars in lost revenue without matches, while also having to close their museum that draws thousands of visitors per week.

Barcelona are using a labor legislation in Spain called ERTE that allows companies to temporary reduce wages during exceptional circumstances.

"Basically it is a reduction of the working day, imposed by the circumstances and the protection measures carried out, and, as a consequence, the proportional reduction of the remuneration provided for in the respective contracts," said the club in a statement.

Spanish FA Offers $540 Million Bailout For La Liga Clubs

Mar 25, 2020 1:08 PM

The Royal Spanish Football Federation announced a $540 million bailout for clubs in Spain's first and second division to help cover costs during the COVID-19 pandemic.

La Liga suspended their schedule indefinitely due to the severity of the virus in Spain.

"We want to offer La Liga the possibility to sit down and get the financing for first and second division clubs. We have spoken to several banks and are able to offer a credit line worth €500m to first and second division clubs that are struggling and that can be repaid in the next four, five or six years," said Spanish FA president Luis Rubiales.

Rubiales also said that a potential May return for the league is impossible given the current state of the country.

"We think it's practically impossible to resume competitions at the beginning of May. We have temporary hospitals being put up in Madrid and the military emergency units [UME] are out on the streets," said Rubiales.
