Gareth Southgate 'Desperate' To Take England To World Cup

Mar 15, 2018 1:20 PM

Gareth Southgate remains focused on preparing his England team for the World Cup despite the increase in political tensions with Russia.

“Clearly it’s a really serious matter and it’s developing very quickly,” he said. “But my job as the England football manager is to concentrate on the football and prepare the team.

“As far as all my briefings and information is, we’re preparing to go to the World Cup – there’s no doubt in our mind that’s what we should be doing. And the only thing at this stage that is of highest importance is the safety and security of our players and absolutely of our travelling supporters. They’re the things we’re focused on really.

“I think it’s a matter that’s completely out of my control really. We are desperate to go to a World Cup and that’s where my remit ends on that matter.”

Mark Hughes Identified As Top Candidate By Southampton

Mar 13, 2018 10:19 AM

Mark Hughes has been identified as the candidate most likely to replace Mauricio Pellegrino as manager of Southampton.

Saints vice chairman Les Reed and his director of football operations, Ross Wilson, always have contingencies in place for the departure of staff and it is likely they would have sounded out Hughes over recent weeks.

Hughes was fired by Stoke City in January.

Saints Fire Mauricio Pellegrino As Manager

Mar 12, 2018 7:44 PM

Southampton have fired Mauricio Pellegrino as manager.

Marco Silva, the former Watford and Hull City manager who is now out of work, was once of interest to Saints, while Slavisa Jokanovic, the Fulham manager, has also previously been linked with the club.

Southampton have won only five league games this season, two of them against the bottom club, West Bromwich Albion. Pellegrino was expected to bring an attacking brand of front-foot football to St Mary’s.

Reports Suggest Neymar Could End Up With Barcelona Or Real Madrid

Mar 10, 2018 9:26 AM

Ernesto Valverde called the possibility of Neymar's return to his club "a fantasy" after reports published in Spain on Friday said the Brazilian has asked to come back to Barcelona.

The same report also linked him to a €400 million move to Real Madrid.

Paris Saint-Germain paid a world-record €222 million to activate Neymar's buyout clause with Barcelona last August.

AS reported that Barcelona's rivals Real Madrid have already told Neymar's father, who also serves as his manager, that they are willing to pay nearly double that amount and meet PSG's asking price of €400 million.

"It seems like a fantasy to me," Valverde said when asked about the chance Neymar could return. "We don't know where it's come from or where it's going to end. We aren't going to talk about suppositions."

Marco Reus Signs Extension With Dortmund Through 2023

Mar 9, 2018 2:54 PM

Marco Reus has agreed upon a contract extension with Borussia Dortmund through the summer of 2023.

Reus joined Dortmund in 2012 from Gladbach.

Reus, whose existing deal was set to expire at the end of next season, told Dortmund's website: "I'm wearing the Dortmund shirt since 2012. I'm happy and proud to announce today that I will continue to wear it. Dortmund is my home, BVB is my club.

"Since my childhood, I dreamed about wearing the Black and Yellow. It's my deepest conviction to set a clear sign for the future with this contract extension. My pledge to the club today is also a thank you to the great fans that always supported me.

"The fact that Hans-Joachim Watzke and Michael Zorc always stayed by my side during times of struggle ultimately had a positive influence on my decision today."

PSG Hopes Champions League Exit Won't Lead To Neymar's Exit

Mar 8, 2018 10:58 AM

Paris Saint-Germain are concerned their exit in the Champions League could lead to the exit of Neymar this summer.

Neymar arrived last summer for a world record fee but his first season has been problematic on and off the pitch.

Marquinhos sees retaining Neymar as key to PSG's eventual conquest of Europe's crown pleading with the striker "in particular" to "stay". "Neymar is a vital player for us, and he should have faith in our project, our team and our players".

Joachim Low Identified As Arsenal's Top Candidate

Mar 7, 2018 11:53 AM

Arsenal has identified Joachim Low as their leading candidate to replace Arsene Wenger if he doesn't return for the 18-19 season.

Wenger's standing with Arsenal has severely weakened over the past few weeks.

Some senior players of Arsenal have lost faith in Wenger and believe a chance is needed.

Wenger signed a two-year deal after winning last season's FA Cup over Chelsea.

Monaco's Leonardo Jardim and Celtic's Brendan Rodgers also have support in some quarters of Arsenal but Low is the preferred contract.

Low is under contract with the German national football association (DFB) until the end of Euro 2020, but there is a belief within the game that he could be tempted to take on the challenge of club management after the World Cup.

Pep Guardiola: City Not On Barcelona's Level Yet

Mar 7, 2018 1:56 AM

Pep Guardiola believes Manchester City remains inferior to Barcelona.

While City has had an outstanding season, Guardiola feels like they will have to dominate for an extended period to be considered on the same level as Barcelona.

“They have won a lot in the past. We are new – we’ve won one title [the League Cup] but it is not a [fair] comparison,” Guardiola said. “It is not good for us comparing [ourselves] with that Barcelona team. That team dominated the last decade, 15 to 20 years with different managers, different players. We have just won the first title. To join this kind of team you have to be there a long time.”
