Mauricio Pochettino has selected Gio Reyna for the 2026 World Cup roster, multiple sources told The Athletic. Winger Brenden Aaronson, center back Mark McKenzie, goalkeeper Matt Turner, and midfielder Sebastian Berhalter also made the 26-man squad. An official announcement is scheduled for Tuesday in New York City.
Reyna, 23, carries a complicated history with the program. He was nearly sent home from the 2022 World Cup for behavioral issues, and Pochettino previously labeled him a "special situation" given his ability despite limited club minutes.
The Borussia Monchengladbach midfielder logged just 509 Bundesliga minutes this season but featured in each of his club's final five matches, scoring once. He holds nine goals across 36 international appearances and scored against World Cup opponent Paraguay last November.
"I'm just hoping and waiting for the call-up, it would be an honor," said Reyna. "The national team means a lot to me. ... I'd love to be there, have an impact on the team. It would be a dream to represent my country at the World Cup."
Real Salt Lake attacker Diego Luna was not selected, sources confirmed. Luna appeared in 17 of 18 USMNT matches in 2025 but was battling a muscle injury. RSL teammate Zavier Gozo, 19, was also excluded.
Aaronson earns his second World Cup nod after appearing in 36 of Leeds United's 37 Premier League matches this season, recording four goals and five assists. Turner, on loan with the New England Revolution from Lyon, leads all MLS goalkeepers in goals minus expected goals, having conceded seven fewer than projected.
Official rosters must be submitted to FIFA by June 1, after which replacements are permitted only for serious injury or illness.
