Thomas Tuchel has named England's 26-man squad for the 2026 World Cup, with Ivan Toney earning a surprise recall and Phil Foden, Cole Palmer, and Trent Alexander-Arnold among the prominent omissions.

Toney, 30, returns to the national team for the first time in a year after scoring 42 goals in 49 appearances for Saudi Arabian club Al Ahli. He had managed just two minutes of action in his last England appearance. Alexander-Arnold has not featured under Tuchel at any point this season.

Foden and Palmer's absences leave England without two of their most creative attacking options, though neither produced a particularly strong club season. Morgan Gibbs-White, who contributed 17 goals and seven assists for Nottingham Forest this season, was also left out.

Manchester City and Arsenal lead all clubs with four players each in the squad. City's contingent includes Marc Guehi, Nico O'Reilly, John Stones, and James Trafford, while Arsenal contribute Eberechi Eze, Noni Madueke, Declan Rice, and Bukayo Saka. Newcastle United and Aston Villa each placed three players.

Harry Maguire expressed his frustration Thursday after being excluded, saying he was "shocked and gutted." Tuchel had publicly ranked Maguire fifth in the defensive pecking order less than two months ago.

Arsenal defender Ben White's right knee ligament injury, sustained May 10, ruled him out of contention. Tottenham forward Dominic Solanke also missed out after suffering a hamstring injury in April.

England will travel to Miami on June 1 for warm-up friendlies against New Zealand in Tampa on June 6 and Costa Rica in Orlando on June 10. Tuchel's side, placed in Group L, face Croatia on June 17, Ghana on June 23, and Panama on June 27.

Brighton goalkeeper Jason Steele will travel with the squad as an additional training player.

England are -320 favorites to win Group L, according to our latest World Cup betting odds.
