Mikel Arteta Defends Arsenal Against Criticism After Reaching UCL Semi

Apr 16, 2026 7:28 AM

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta pushed back against mounting criticism of his side Wednesday, urging supporters to appreciate the club's position after a 0-0 draw against Sporting CP secured a Champions League semifinal berth and a tie with Atletico Madrid.

The result marked the first time in Arsenal's history the club has reached back-to-back Champions League semifinals. The Gunners advanced on a 1-0 aggregate scoreline despite registering just one shot on target in the second leg. Arsenal had a 0.78 to 0.33 xG edge in what was a tepid match.

"Please, enjoy where we are as a club," Arteta said. "If someone doesn't want to do it, so be it. We are enjoying a lot, and I feel a huge gratitude for what the players are doing and our supporters, so thank you."

Arteta referenced the Amazon "All or Nothing" documentary from Arsenal's 2021-22 season to illustrate what he viewed as disproportionate scrutiny of his team.

"I wish that we were doing the Arsenal documentary this season, and you can film the last 48 hours and know everything that has been said [about us]," Arteta said. "I think all of us will say they are in the bottom three [based on the criticism]. So what are we talking about, guys?"

Arsenal sit atop the Premier League but carry a six-year trophy drought into the stretch run, having lost the Carabao Cup Final to Manchester City and exited the FA Cup against Championship side Southampton. The club has never won the Champions League and last claimed the Premier League title 22 years ago.

Arteta revealed midfielder Declan Rice overcame a significant fitness scare to play all 94 minutes against Sporting.

"Declan yesterday, he was shattered," Arteta said. "He had no chance to play today, he wasn't feeling good at all today, he played 94 minutes at the level that he's on. Every single player is putting everything through the line to contribute."

Winger Noni Madueke requires assessment after leaving Wednesday's match with a knee problem ahead of Sunday's Premier League fixture at Manchester City, who trail Arsenal by six points with a game in hand.

Arsenal Enter Champions League Quarters As Tournament Favorites

Apr 7, 2026 11:16 AM

Europe's Champions League quarterfinals open Tuesday with eight clubs battling for a place in the Budapest final. Real Madrid host Bayern Munich in the competition's most-played fixture, while Arsenal, Barcelona and PSG headline the four-tie slate.

Real Madrid enter as +800 title contenders, according to BetMGM, trailing favorites Arsenal (+275) and Bayern (+300). Kylian Mbappe leads all scorers with 13 goals in nine matches, one every 56 minutes, the most efficient rate among double-figure scorers in a single edition since Erling Haaland in 2019-20.

Bayern arrive in formidable shape, scoring at 3.2 goals per Champions League game this season. The Bavarians have only surpassed that rate twice in club history.

Arsenal travel to Lisbon having allowed just five Champions League goals all season, the lowest total among remaining clubs. Their defense ranks first across Europe's top five leagues in both goals and expected goals permitted. Victor Gyokeres returns to face his former club.

Barcelona (+450) host Atletico Madrid without Raphinha, placing expanded responsibility on 18-year-old Lamine Yamal. Atletico are without Pablo Barrios, Jan Oblak and Marcos Llorente for Wednesday's match, their fourth meeting in two months.

PSG swept Chelsea 8-2 in the previous round and carry 34 Champions League goals into their rematch with Liverpool (+1000), who will be without goalkeeper Alisson for both legs.

Champions League Last 16 Draw Delivers Man City Versus Real Madrid

Feb 27, 2026 12:36 PM

The Champions League last 16 draw has produced a series of heavyweight matchups for English clubs, headlined by Manchester City's fifth knockout meeting in five years with Real Madrid, Chelsea's rematch with Paris Saint-Germain, and Newcastle's clash with Barcelona.

Chelsea's tie with PSG reprises last summer's Club World Cup final in New Jersey, which Chelsea won 3-0 with two goals from Cole Palmer under then-manager Enzo Maresca. New Chelsea boss Liam Rosenior, who went 1-1-1 against PSG during his time at Strasbourg, welcomed the draw.

"These are the games you live for, games that you come into football for," Rosenior said. "It's going to be a great tie."

Liverpool face a difficult return to Istanbul for a rematch with Galatasaray, having lost 1-0 there in a September league-phase meeting. Arsenal drew Bayer Leverkusen in what is considered a more favorable pairing among the English clubs involved.

"We're really excited," Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta said. "Let's try to be there until the last stage of every competition."

Tottenham, currently battling Premier League survival concerns, will face Atletico Madrid in a tie that brings a quick reunion for midfielder Conor Gallagher, who joined Spurs from the Spanish club in January.

Newcastle's meeting with Barcelona carries historical weight, evoking memories of Sir Bobby Robson, who managed both clubs, and Faustino Asprilla's famous hat trick in a 3-2 home win over the Catalan side in 1997. Barcelona won the clubs' most recent encounter, a September league-phase match at St. James' Park, 2-1 with two goals from Marcus Rashford.

The draw also set a potential path toward a Liverpool-Chelsea quarterfinal and a north London semifinal between Arsenal and Tottenham should both advance.

Champions League Round of 16 Ties:

• 1. Arsenal vs. 16. Leverkusen
• 2. Bayern vs. 15. Atalanta
• 3. Liverpool vs. 20. Galatasaray
• 4. Tottenham vs. 14. Atletico
• 5. Barcelona vs. 12. Newcastle
• 6. Chelsea vs. 11. PSG
• 7. Sporting CP vs. 23. Bodo/Glimt
• 8. Man City vs. 9. Real Madrid

Barcelona Target Julian Alvarez, Goncalo Inacio For Summer Transfers

Sep 22, 2025 11:33 AM

Barcelona are already planning summer reinforcements with sporting director Deco identifying a central striker and centre-back as priorities, targeting Atletico Madrid's Julian Alvarez and Sporting CP's Goncalo Inacio according to club sources.

Club president Joan Laporta reportedly admires Alvarez as a potential replacement for Robert Lewandowski. The Poland striker entered the final year of his contract and is expected to leave after turning 37 last month.

Alvarez's goalscoring ability, work rate, and versatility make him an attractive option for Barcelona's search. The 25-year-old Argentina forward impressed during his debut season with Atletico Madrid after joining from Manchester City.

Any move for Alvarez would prove expensive given his recent transfer history. Atletico paid Manchester City up to $111.9 million for the forward's services last summer, setting a high valuation for potential suitors.

Barcelona have monitored Sporting CP defender Goncalo Inacio over recent months as a centre-back option. The 24-year-old Portugal international's left-footed profile appeals to club officials following Inigo Martinez's departure to Al Nassr last month.

Both potential signings face various complications that will impact Barcelona's realistic transfer ambitions. The club's well-documented financial constraints could limit their ability to pursue high-value targets during the summer window.

Barcelona's transfer planning reflects their need to refresh key positions while maintaining competitive squad depth. The early identification of targets suggests proactive recruitment despite ongoing financial challenges.

Further details about Barcelona's summer transfer strategy are expected to develop throughout the week as club officials continue evaluating potential reinforcements.

Viktor Gyokeres Joins Arsenal From Sporting On $74M Transfer

Jul 26, 2025 4:33 PM

Viktor Gyokeres has completed his transfer to Arsenal from Sporting CP. Gyokeres will cost Arsenal $74 million plus $11.7 million in add-ons. Gyokeres will sign a five-year contract with Arsenal and wear No. 14 for the club.

"We're absolutely delighted to welcome Viktor Gyökeres to the club," Arsenal head coach Mikel Arteta said in a statement. "The consistency he has shown in his performances and availability have been outstanding, and his goal contributions speak for themselves.

"Viktor has so many qualities. He is a quick and powerful presence up front, with incredible goalscoring numbers at club and international levels. He brings a clinical edge with a high conversion rate of chances into goals, with his intelligent movement in the box making him a constant threat.

"We're excited about what Viktor brings to our squad and are looking forward to start working with him. We welcome Viktor and his family to Arsenal."

Arsenal has long sought an upgrade at striker as they have relied upon makeshift options for the past few seasons. Gyokeres scored 68 league goals in just 66 appearances in Portugal. Gyokeres joined Sporting from Coventry City in 2023.

Arsenal Finalizing $74.2M Viktor Gyokeres Transfer From Sporting

Jul 22, 2025 11:13 AM

Arsenal and Sporting CP are finalizing a $74.2 million transfer for striker Viktor Gyokeres, with only minor details remaining before the Swedish international's move to the Premier League is completed.

The clubs agreed on a base fee of $74.2 million plus $11.7 million in future bonuses. Recent negotiations focused on resolving disputes over the achievability of contingency payments, with talks now at an advanced stage.

The 27-year-old Sweden international remained focused solely on joining Arsenal despite late interest from other clubs. Gyokeres' agent waived his commission to facilitate the transfer, and Arsenal has prepared a contract through June 2030.

Sporting president Frederico Varandas previously threatened Gyokeres with a "heavy fine" after the striker missed pre-season training amid Arsenal's pursuit. The forward has since been absent from team activities as negotiations progressed.

Gyokeres scored 54 goals in 52 matches for Sporting last season, helping the Portuguese club secure a league and cup double. Arsenal identified the striker as their preferred center-forward target after finishing second in the Premier League for a third consecutive campaign.

The Gunners scored 17 fewer goals than champions Liverpool while dealing with injuries to forwards Kai Havertz and Gabriel Jesus. Gyokeres recorded 97 goals and 28 assists since joining Sporting from Coventry City for $20.4 million in 2023.

Arsenal has been busy under new sporting director Andrea Berta, adding midfielders Martin Zubimendi and Christian Norgaard. The club also secured goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga and winger Noni Madueke from Chelsea, with defender Cristhian Mosquera expected to complete his move from Valencia.

Arsenal Complete $86M Transfer For Sporting Striker Viktor Gyokeres

Jul 13, 2025 10:12 PM

Arsenal finalized negotiations with Sporting CP to sign striker Viktor Gyokeres for $74.2 million plus $11.7 million in add-ons. The 27-year-old Sweden international has agreed to a five-year contract with the Premier League club. Gyokeres' agent waived his fee to facilitate the transfer after prolonged negotiations with Sporting president Frederico Varandas.

Arsenal's offer exceeded the €60 million plus €10 million in add-ons that Gyokeres believed was previously agreed for his summer departure. The striker has not returned to pre-season training with Sporting amid his desire to join Arsenal.

Manager Mikel Arteta identified Gyokeres as Arsenal's preferred choice to recruit a specialist center-forward. The Swedish striker prioritized Arsenal over all other suitors and wants to join the squad immediately.

Gyokeres joined Sporting from Coventry City in 2023 and developed into one of Europe's most in-demand players. Last season he scored 54 goals in 52 games as Sporting won the league title and cup double.

The transfer represents Arsenal's fifth signing of the summer window. The club previously added midfielders Martin Zubimendi and Christian Norgaard, goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga, and agreed a deal for Chelsea winger Noni Madueke.

Arsenal finished second in the Premier League last season, ten points behind champions Liverpool with 17 fewer goals scored. The club lacked a recognized number nine for much of the campaign after injuries to Kai Havertz and Gabriel Jesus.

Sporting director Andrea Berta had admired Gyokeres for some time before Arsenal developed strong interest earlier this year. The striker has scored 15 goals in 26 international appearances for Sweden since making his debut at age 20.

Gyokeres' arrival adds a new dimension to Arteta's tactical setup. His 68 league goals since joining Sporting represents more than double any other player in Portugal during that period, establishing him as a prolific finisher with explosive pace and physical presence.

Viktor Gyokeres Refuses Sporting CP Training As Arsenal Move Stalls

Jul 11, 2025 3:28 PM

Viktor Gyokeres has refused to report for pre-season training with Sporting CP as he pursues a transfer to Arsenal. The 27-year-old striker was absent from Friday's delayed return date and told club president Frederico Varandas he will not play for them again.

Gyokeres feels betrayed and believes Varandas reneged on an agreement to let him leave for €60 million plus €10 million. Arsenal have already surpassed that fee but no agreement is in place between the clubs.

The Sweden international is prioritizing a transfer to the Emirates Stadium over other possibilities. Arsenal are working to land Gyokeres and have a five-year deal prepared, subject to the clubs reaching a compromise on the transfer fee.

Gyokeres joined Sporting from Coventry City in 2023 and has developed into one of Europe's most in-demand players. Last season, he scored 54 goals in 52 games as Sporting won the league title and cup double.

In total, Gyokeres has scored 97 goals in just 102 games for the Portuguese club. Arsenal were without a recognized No. 9 for much of last season as they finished second in the Premier League, ten points behind champions Liverpool.

Kai Havertz and Gabriel Jesus filled the striker role for much of the season before both suffered injuries. Midfielder Mikel Merino deputized as a makeshift forward late in the campaign.

Arsenal have made three signings so far this summer with midfielders Martin Zubimendi and Christian Norgaard joining from Real Sociedad and Brentford respectively. Goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga arrived from Chelsea.

The Gunners scored 17 fewer goals than Liverpool last season, highlighting their need for a clinical finisher. Gyokeres' 68 league goals since joining Sporting is well over double that of any other player in Portugal during that period.

Arsenal Could Be Pivoting To Viktor Gyokeres

Mar 30, 2025 9:57 PM

Viktor Gyokeres has become a prominent candidate in Arsenal's search for a new striker, moving ahead of Alexander Isak due to his more affordable projected fee to leaving Sporting.

Gyokeres has recorded 85 goals and 26 assists in 92 games for Sporting. Gyokeres has been a late bloomer and is not especially quick, but has decent technique and has shown a willingness to improve.

Benjamin Sesko of RB Leipzig is another potential target for Arsenal.
