Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta pushed back against mounting criticism of his side Wednesday, urging supporters to appreciate the club's position after a 0-0 draw against Sporting CP secured a Champions League semifinal berth and a tie with Atletico Madrid.
The result marked the first time in Arsenal's history the club has reached back-to-back Champions League semifinals. The Gunners advanced on a 1-0 aggregate scoreline despite registering just one shot on target in the second leg. Arsenal had a 0.78 to 0.33 xG edge in what was a tepid match.
"Please, enjoy where we are as a club," Arteta said. "If someone doesn't want to do it, so be it. We are enjoying a lot, and I feel a huge gratitude for what the players are doing and our supporters, so thank you."
Arteta referenced the Amazon "All or Nothing" documentary from Arsenal's 2021-22 season to illustrate what he viewed as disproportionate scrutiny of his team.
"I wish that we were doing the Arsenal documentary this season, and you can film the last 48 hours and know everything that has been said [about us]," Arteta said. "I think all of us will say they are in the bottom three [based on the criticism]. So what are we talking about, guys?"
Arsenal sit atop the Premier League but carry a six-year trophy drought into the stretch run, having lost the Carabao Cup Final to Manchester City and exited the FA Cup against Championship side Southampton. The club has never won the Champions League and last claimed the Premier League title 22 years ago.
Arteta revealed midfielder Declan Rice overcame a significant fitness scare to play all 94 minutes against Sporting.
"Declan yesterday, he was shattered," Arteta said. "He had no chance to play today, he wasn't feeling good at all today, he played 94 minutes at the level that he's on. Every single player is putting everything through the line to contribute."
Winger Noni Madueke requires assessment after leaving Wednesday's match with a knee problem ahead of Sunday's Premier League fixture at Manchester City, who trail Arsenal by six points with a game in hand.
