May 31, 2021 12:07 AM

CONMEBOL pulled this summer's Copa America from Argentina due to an increase of COVID-19 cases in the country.

Colombia was previously dropped as a co-host because of protests against President Ivan Duque.

The tournament is scheduled for June 13 through July 10.

CONMEBOL added that a new host would be announced "soon."

Copa America Postponed Until 2021

Mar 17, 2020 1:09 PM

CONMEBOL postponed this summer's Copa America until 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

"This is an extraordinary measure for an unexpected situation and responds to the fundamental need to avoid the exponential evolution of the virus," said CONMEBOL president Alejandro Dominguez.

The tournament will now be rescheduled between June 11th and July 11th. The tournament will take place in Argentina and Colombia.

The decision comes on the heels of UEFA suspending the European Championship until 2021.

Messi Blames 'Corruption' For Red Card, Conmebol Hits Back

Jul 7, 2019 2:14 PM

Lionel Messi blamed his comments made last week criticizing the officiating after Argentina's loss to Brazil for his red card in the third-place match against Chile.

“We don’t need to be part of the corruption that we’ve suffered at this tournament. Medel is always right at the limit. With a yellow that would have been the end of it for both of us, but well, maybe what I said recently had an impact," said Messi.

Argentina won the match 2-1. Messi received the second red card of his career.

Conmebol responded to Messi's accusations.

“These accusations represent a lack of respect for the competition, all the participating players and the hundreds of professionals of Conmebol, an institution that since 2016 has been working tirelessly to make transparent, professionalize and develop South American football," released the federation in a statement.

Germany Beats Chile 1-0 To Win 2017 Confederations Cup

Jul 2, 2017 9:52 PM

Germany defeated Chile in the final of the Confederations Cup 1-0, which came two days after the country won the under-21 European Championship.

Joachim Low traveled to Russia without many of his regulars.

Lars Stindl scored the lone goal of the match in the 20th minute.

“The fact that these young players have won this trophy is a historic achievement. It’s unique in Germany history,” Löw said.

“It is just outstanding: players with so little international experience, with so few caps in other final matches, have been playing at the top level of quality.”

Manuel Pellegrini Prefers Club Managing Over Chile's National Team

Jan 19, 2016 8:49 PM

Manuel Pellegrini says he won't take the open Chile job as Jorge Sampaoli finally agreed to a buyout.

Pellegrini's future at Manchester City is uncertain as Pep Guardiola is widely expected to take that job next season.

"I hope to remain with competitive teams in Europe, I am not thinking about returning to Chile at least for the next three or four years," the veteran manager told Radio Cooperativa.

Marcelo Bielsa is rumoured to be a candidate to replace Sampaoli, who coached Universidad de Chile in 2011-12 to three league titles and the Copa Sudamericana championship.

Pellegrini did offer his services for the World Cup if he was needed.

"If it is something, like the next World Cup, to which I could bring my experience in other leagues, surely, I would consider it," Pellegrini said. "As for now, I would like to have the project of a club at which I am competing each week."

Jorge Sampaoli Reaches Buyout With Chile

Jan 19, 2016 5:21 PM

Jorge Sampaoli is no longer the manager of Chile after reaching an agreement to terminate his contract on Tuesday.

Sampaoli reportedly would have had to pay the €6.3 million remaining on the deal, but multiple reports now say that figure dropped to between €600,000 to a little over €1 million.

Sampaoli led Chile to the 2015 Copa America title.

Last week, Sampaoli told ESPN Deportes that he was "being held hostage" by the contract.

Jorge Sampaoli Set To Leave Chile To Flamengo

Dec 1, 2015 4:22 PM

Jorge Sampaoli will leave his position as manager of Chile to join Flamengo if Wallim Vasconcellos wins the club's election on Dec. 9.

Sampaoli led Chile to the Copa America title this past summer.

Sampaoli has also been linked to Valencia.

"He has received other proposals. But he knows the strength and greatness of Flamengo," Sampaoli's representative, Gelson Baresi, told Globoesporte.

"I have to wait for the elections, because we do not know who will be president. What I can say is that this is not a political move."
