MLS Rejects $4 Billion Media Deal Requiring Promotion, Relegation

Jul 24, 2017 6:53 PM

The MLS has rejected a $4 billion global media rights deal from MP & Silva.

The offer would have quadrupled the annual rate of the current deal.

Included in the offer was a significant contingency for the MLS to institute promotion and relegation.

According to the SBJ, Silva made a presentation to MLS executives and owners on June 26. At that meeting, Silva offered to pay $4 billion for MLS's worldwide media rights, including the U.S. and Canada, at which point MP & Silva would sell on those rights around the world.

MLS is currently engaged in its latest round of expansion, and is asking for expansion fees of $150 million.

Barcelona Earns Sports Record $770M In Revenues During 16-17 Season

Jul 19, 2017 2:03 PM

Barcelona reported record revenue of €708 million on Monday or $770 million based on average exchange rates over the last 12 months.

That figure beats the $765 million earned by Manchester United for the 15-16 season.

While Barcelona finished second in La Liga and were eliminated in the quarterfinals of the Champions League, total revenue was $14 million higher than projected and up by $31 million.

Barcelona recently ranked fourth overall in Forbes annual look at the world’s most valuable sports franchises at $3.64 billion.

Barcelona says the team’s debt-to-earnings ratio is roughly two-to-one meaning earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization clocked in at more than $130 million for the season.

Barcelona allocated 66 percent of its expenditures for “payment of salaries to athletes.”
