Manchester United thought they would be able to buy Luke Shaw from Southampton for £30 million, but the price has been elevated by Ronald Koeman to £40 million.

Shaw will turn just 19 in July and is considered one of the best young left backs in the world.

Louis van Gaal wanted to make Shaw one of his first signings at United, carrying over the interest the club had in the England international dating back to the David Moyes' tenure.

Koeman is demanding a high transfer fee as Southampton also deals with the loss of Rickie Lambert and possibly Adam Lallana as well.
