Jan Vertonghen has signed a new contract at Tottenham that will run until 2019, the club have announced.

Vertonghen has been in negotiations since the end of last season and his new deal extends his commitment to Spurs by a year.

Spurs acquired Vertonghen from Ajax in July of 2012.

“I was very happy once I put my autograph on the paper,” Vertonghen told Spurs TV. “I was extremely happy, big relief. I’m very happy to be here, the future looks great so I am very happy to be a part of it.

“This is an unbelievable group of talented guys and I feel privileged to be a part of that. There’s a great atmosphere in the team and a great buzz around Tottenham.”
