Chelsea have agreed to a club-record $157 million deal to sign England midfielder Morgan Rogers from Aston Villa. The 23-year-old will sign a six-year contract with an option for an additional year and is set to undergo a medical Monday after returning from World Cup duty with England.

The fee sets a new transfer record for an English player, surpassing the $155.4 million Manchester City paid Nottingham Forest for midfielder Elliot Anderson earlier this summer. Rogers also becomes Chelsea's most expensive signing in club history, eclipsing the $143.4 million spent on Argentina midfielder Enzo Fernandez in 2023.

The move comes as new Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso continues shaping his squad ahead of the new Premier League season. Rogers previously came through Manchester City's academy before joining Villa from Middlesbrough in February 2024 for an initial $10.7 million, rising to $20.1 million.

A sell-on clause in that original deal entitles Middlesbrough to 20 percent of any profit Villa makes on a future sale of Rogers, meaning the Championship club will earn at least $27.3 million from this transfer, a figure that could rise depending on performance-based add-ons. Middlesbrough believes the sum represents an English record for the largest sell-on fee.

Rogers scored 21 goals in 85 league appearances for Villa under manager Unai Emery and was part of the squad that won the Europa League last season. He has earned 22 senior England caps, scoring once, and featured in seven matches during this summer's World Cup.

His departure marks the second Villa midfielder to leave this week, following Youri Tielemans' $46.9 million move to Manchester United. Villa has since brought in Switzerland international Johan Manzambi from Freiburg in a deal worth more than $67 million and is finalizing a $50.9 million agreement for Wolves midfielder Joao Gomes.

Rogers has been a Chelsea target for more than two years, though the timing of the move comes as something of a surprise given the club's 10th-place Premier League finish last season. The signing raises questions about how Rogers will fit alongside Cole Palmer, given the pair's similar playing profiles. Rogers was one of three England players who made Thomas Tuchel's World Cup squad ahead of Palmer.

Alonso, who has used both back-four and back-five systems at previous clubs Real Madrid and Bayer Leverkusen, has not yet revealed his preferred approach this early in his tenure. Rogers and Palmer will compete for attacking minutes alongside Estevao Willian, Pedro Neto, Jamie Gittens and fellow summer signing Geovany Quenda, with Alejandro Garnacho departing to make room in the squad.

Off the pitch, Rogers and Palmer have described each other as best friends in football, having developed together through Manchester City's youth academy. Palmer's well-known "Cold Palmer" goal celebration was reportedly inspired by a pose Rogers first performed while playing for Middlesbrough.

Rogers was also linked with Arsenal leading to the Chelsea transfer.
