Following a crushing Champions League exit, Chelsea vice-captain Enzo Fernandez left his future at Stamford Bridge uncertain. The 25-year-old Argentine made the comments Tuesday after PSG eliminated Chelsea 8-2 on aggregate, which matches the club's worst European defeat.
Fernandez, who captained the side in Reece James' absence, told ESPN Argentina his plans beyond this season remain unclear.
"I don't know," Fernandez said. "My focus is here for now. We have eight Premier League matches to play and the FA Cup. Then, the World Cup coming up so we'll see after that."
Signed from Benfica in February 2023 for a then-British record $141 million, Fernandez is under contract through 2032. He has made 160 appearances for Chelsea, helping the club win the Conference League and Club World Cup. Real Madrid and PSG have reportedly been linked with the midfielder.
Chelsea head coach Liam Rosenior downplayed the remarks when questioned after the match.
"Firstly, I haven't seen that," said Rosenior. "It's hard for me to speak on speculation after a game and I need to focus right now on the most important things, which is making sure we get a result against Everton on Saturday."
Goals from Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, Bradley Barcola and Senny Mayulu powered PSG's 3-0 home leg victory. Chelsea were booed off at halftime and fulltime.
"At this level, you can't concede two goals so quickly because of small details. Ultimately, over the two legs, PSG were the better side and deserve to go through," Fernandez said.
Chelsea currently sit sixth in the Premier League, one point behind Liverpool in fifth. Rosenior acknowledged the club's shortcomings across both legs.
"We have to learn at the top, top level to be clinical and to make sure we keep the back door shut," Rosenior said. "We've done neither over the two legs and that's why we're out of the competition."
