Real Madrid's Champions League fixture against Benfica was stopped for approximately 10 minutes in the second half following allegations of racist abuse directed at Vinicius Junior. The match concluded 1-0 in favor of the visitors but was overshadowed by the incident.
The alleged abuse occurred after Vinicius scored in the 50th minute at Estadio da Luz. Following his celebration and a confrontation with Benfica players, the Brazilian forward approached referee Francois Letexier and appeared to indicate Benfica forward Gianluca Prestianni.
Letexier invoked FIFA's No Racism Gesture, crossing his arms in an X shape above his head to pause the match. Vinicius sat on the Madrid bench for several minutes during the stoppage before the game resumed.
Prestianni denied the allegations in an Instagram post after the final whistle.
"I want to clarify that at no time did I direct racist insults to Vini Jr, who regrettably misunderstood what he thought he heard," the statement read. "I was never racist with anyone and I regret the threats I received from Real Madrid players."
Kylian Mbappe said he heard Prestianni "say that Vinicius is a monkey, five times" and called for action beyond football. Trent Alexander-Arnold labeled the incident a "disgrace to football."
Benfica released video footage alongside a statement suggesting the distance between players meant Real Madrid could not have heard what they claimed. Multiple videos showed Prestianni confronting Vinicius following the goal.
Vinicius posted on Instagram after the match: "Racists are, above all, cowards. They need to put their shirts over their mouths to show how weak they are."
Benfica manager Jose Mourinho accused Vinicius of inciting the incident and noted that "every stadium where Vinicius plays, something happens."
Letexier will submit a match report and UEFA's Control, Ethics and Disciplinary Body will determine whether to open an investigation. UEFA guidelines mandate a minimum 10-match suspension for players found guilty of racist conduct.
Vinicius has been targeted multiple times throughout his career, including incidents in Spain involving Atletico Madrid and Valencia supporters.
