Lionel Messi and Barcelona have agreed upon an improved contract that will see his pay increase from $17.8 million per season net to $27.4 million net.

Messi's current deal ends in June 2018 and contains a $342 million release clause with both of those terms remaining unchanged.

Talks of an improved deal have been ongoing since the fall when Neymar and Cristiano Ronaldo were threatening his status as the world's best-paid player.

When talks stalled, there were rumors of a possible transfer to Paris Saint-Germain, Manchester City, Chelsea, Bayern Munich or even Real Madrid.

Barça released the following statement on the deal: "FC Barcelona has reached an agreement to adjust the terms in the contract binding Leo Messi to the club as a professional first team player. The revised and updated contract will be signed over the next few days."
