Zlatan: Rival Clubs Afraid, Jealous Of PSG's Growth

May 28, 2014 12:51 PM

Zlatan Ibrahimović said that rival clubs are putting pressure on UEFA to use Financial Fair Play to hold Paris Saint-Germain back.

PSG has been warned by UEFA that they will have to reduce their wage bill before any additional significant signings are made following their move for David Luiz.

"The other big clubs are afraid of this huge project, that's why they use financial fair play to try to counter it. Some are perhaps jealous," the Sweden captain, who will lead his nation in Copenhagen on Wednesday, stated.

"With the club, the value of the Champions League increases, the television rights increase. I hope that UEFA acknowledge that, because PSG works for UEFA. We work for French football, but also for European football."

PSG: FFP Ruling Will Have No Impact On Future Operations

May 19, 2014 10:18 AM

Paris St Germain president Nasser al-Khelaifi believes UEFA's Financial Fair Play ruling won't have an impact on how the club operates.

After several summers of huge spending at the Parc des Princes, Al-Khelaifi claims the penalties will do nothing to stop him signing the players he wants for the club.

"The players that I want, I will have,'' he said in comments reported by L'Equipe. "This changes nothing of the project, the motivation of the club and the players. We respect and accept this decision. But nothing and no one will stop us, we always dream bigger.

"We had a plan over five years when we bought the club and that will not change. We have already invested a lot in the last three years and we will continue.''

Man City Accepts $82M Fine, Reduced Squad For Champions League

May 16, 2014 3:59 PM

Manchester City has agreed to pay an $82 million fine while also reducing their squad for the Champions League next season as part of a settlement for violating Financial Fair Play rules.

The European governing body will limit City to 21 available players in their Champions League squad, instead of the standard 25.

City also agreed not to increase their current wage bill for two years, and to "significantly limit spending" in the transfer market, based on a calculation of their "net transfer position."

Should City comply with the regulations over the next two seasons, many of the penalties can be ended, and UEFA will return up to $54.8 million.

City Earns $161.8M In TV Money For Winning EPL

May 16, 2014 10:59 AM

Manchester City earned $161.8 million in television rights money, a huge increase from $102 million Manchester United received last season as champions.

Liverpool actually made slightly more than City at $163.5 million due to more of their games being screened live by broadcasters.

Of each club's payment, 50% comes from UK broadcast revenue, which is split equally between the 20 clubs; 25% of it depends on where the club finishes in the league; 25% comes from fees each time a club's matches are broadcast in the UK.

Cardiff City earned $104 million despite finishing in last place in the Premier League.

Real, Barça, United, Bayern Ranked As World's Most Valuable Clubs

May 9, 2014 12:52 PM

Real Madrid and Barcelona are the world's two most valuable soccer clubs, which marks the first time Spain's signature clubs have grabbed the top two spots since Forbes began ranking teams a decade ago.

During the 2012-13 season Real Madrid generated revenue of $675 million–the most of any team in history in any sport–and are now worth $3.44 billion, 4% more than a year ago. Barcelona posted the second-most revenue ($627 million) and are worth $3.2 billion, up 23% from last year.

Manchester United is the third most valuable club in the world, worth $2.8 billion. But the value of the club decreased by 11% during the past year after a disappointing performance in the Premier League.

Bayern Munich rose 41% in value to $1.85 billion and now rank fourth.

Arsenal, Chelsea, Manchester City, AC Milan, Juventus and Liverpool round out the top-10.

Two newcomers to the top-20: Paris Saint-German landed in the 15th spot, worth $415 million and Galatasaray, worth $347 million, ranked 16th.

Wenger Lauds City While Backing FFP Sanctions

May 8, 2014 12:46 PM

Arsène Wenger praised Manchester City for being on the cusp of another Premier League title, while also endorsing UEFA's plans to sanction the club for failing to comply with Financial Fair Play rules.

"Man City just won it in the end, just getting over the line. They won the marathon and they turned up in the last 100 yards. They turned up when it mattered. There were a few turning points and one big turning point was the Everton game that they won [3-2 on May 3].

"Liverpool had an outstanding second part of the season and they are the most unlucky team of the season because they were nearly there. It was a very interesting season in the Premier League. I believe it was very tight at the top and the bottom. The difference between us and the team that wins the league will be a maximum of seven points if we win our last game.

"We have been 128 days at the top of the Premier League, so we won the stamina league, but we failed in some big games away from home."

Asked whether he was pleased with UEFA's punishments, Wenger said: "Yes, I like it. Look, I am complete supporter of financial fair play. I think every business should live with its own resources, like in any other activity.

"As for the punishment, I think it is a sophisticated punishment and I would like it to be a more simple one that makes more sense. Maybe they [UEFA] have studied that for a very long time to be in accordance with the legal side of it, I don't know."

City Faces $83.5M Fine, Reduced Squad For UCL Over FFP

May 6, 2014 1:42 PM

Manchester City are facing UEFA sanctions for breaching Financial Fair Play rules.

City could be limited to a 21-man Champions League squad instead of 25 players next season.

City also could face an $83.5 million fine over three years and a cap imposed next season to ensure no increase on this season's squad wage bill.

Both Manchester City and Paris Saint-Germain are believed to have fallen foul of the FFP rules with sponsorship deals related to each clubs' owners.

Paris Saint-Germain To Receive Quadruple FFP Sanctions

May 6, 2014 1:40 PM

Paris Saint-Germain can expect to be hit by a four-pronged punishment when UEFA hands out its first financial fair play (FFP) sanctions later this week.

France's main sports daily reported on Tuesday the French champions have failed to convince European football's governing body their recently signed contract with the Qatar Tourism Authority (QTA) is not overvalued.

PSG, which boasts Europe's highest wage bill at 240 million euros, will not be allowed to increase the amount it pays in salaries, and they will have to sell players before being able to spend in the coming transfer window.

UEFA will also reportedly ask PSG to limit their transfer activity, allowing them to buy one player at 60 million euros, but forbidding them to break down that sum to buy two players, for example, at 30 million euros or three at 20 million euros.
