Matthias Sammer has left his post as sports director of Bayern Munich at his request.

Sammer has rarely made public appearances since suffering a blood circulation problem in his brain in April. He said his health has been fully restored but that “at the moment” he had no desire to be available “for the club, the team and the public 24/7”.

Sammer was previously manager of Borussia Dortmund and Stuttgart before becoming technical director of the German Football Association in 2006 and then Bayern in 2012.
