Newcastle United is quietly confident Rafa Benitez can be hired to replace Steve McClaren on an initial 10-game contract with a view toward a longer deal.

Newcastle are unwilling to dismiss Steve McClaren until they are confident of announcing a replacement.

Benitez was fired this season by Real Madrid just a few months after being hired.

Benitez previously managed in the Premier League with Liverpool and Chelsea.
