Liam Rosenior's 106-day tenure as Chelsea manager unraveled through a gradual breakdown in player relations, tactical disputes and mounting discipline concerns, sources familiar with the situation told ESPN.

Early warning signs emerged following Chelsea's Carabao Cup semifinal defeat to Arsenal. Sources told ESPN that Rosenior's cautious tactical approach in the second leg prompted several players to privately question his ambition.

Team news began leaking ahead of both Champions League knockout legs against Paris Saint-Germain. Sources told ESPN that more than one player also questioned internally whether Enzo Fernandez should remain suspended for the subsequent Premier League match against Manchester City, given the broader stakes of Champions League qualification. Fernandez sat out and Chelsea lost 3-0 to City.

Tensions extended to Rosenior's backroom staff. Sources told ESPN that Wesley Fofana visibly shrugged off assistant coach Justin Walker when the latter attempted to console him following his substitution in Saturday's defeat to Manchester United.

Despite the deteriorating situation, sources told ESPN the Chelsea hierarchy had initially hoped Rosenior would continue into next season. However, the complete collapse of relations among players, management and supporters ultimately forced ownership's hand.

Sources also told ESPN that a break clause existed in Rosenior's contract, and his actual settlement represents a fraction of the £24 million figure previously reported.

Chelsea have now launched their search for a sixth permanent head coach since BlueCo's 2022 takeover. Sources confirmed no formal discussions with candidates have commenced. Andoni Iraola, Marco Silva and Cesc Fabregas have emerged as early names linked to the vacancy.
