Strasbourg manager Liam Rosenior is the leading candidate to replace Enzo Maresca as Chelsea head coach, sources told ESPN. The 41-year-old has impressed BlueCo executives, who own both Chelsea and the French club, following Maresca's departure on Thursday.
Sources described a breakdown in relations between Maresca and senior figures at Chelsea as the reason for his exit. The Italian clashed with the club's medical department and wanted greater input in team operations.
Rosenior is the frontrunner in a limited candidate pool. However, sources stressed he is not the only option being considered by Chelsea's leadership.
Roberto de Zerbi is not under consideration despite being interviewed before Maresca's appointment in 2024. Chelsea have also ruled out moves for Como boss Cesc Fabregas and Crystal Palace manager Oliver Glasner.
Sources told ESPN that Maresca disagreed with the medical department's approach. He felt staff unnecessarily restricted playing time for certain players throughout his tenure.
Chelsea's manager receives technical feedback after every match from a support team including five sporting directors. Maresca sought a stronger voice in team decisions, creating friction with the existing structure.
Academy boss Calum McFarlane is not a candidate for the permanent role but is expected to lead the team at Etihad Stadium on Sunday.
Chelsea remain committed to their internal structure despite it becoming a source of frustration for Maresca. Reports have also linked Porto boss Francesco Farioli with the vacancy.
