Real Madrid are preparing to pay the €20 million ($23.7 million) release clause of Athletic Bilbao keeper Kepa Arrizabalaga in January.

Negotiations between Athletic and Kepa are understood to have broken down completely. Kepa's contract expires in June.

Athletic's president, Josu Urrutia, has always maintained that a player's release clause must be paid if they are to leave the Bilbao club.

Real Madrid are expected to offer Kepa a six-year contract.
