Lionel Messi is confident in his status as one of soccer's biggest legends in history even if he never wins a World Cup.

"I think there are many players considered the best ever without a World Cup," Messi said.

"But obviously winning a World Cup is a positive and it would be very special.

"I hope we are in Rio [the venue for the final of Brazil 2014] enjoying the day there. Hopefully, we can reach that final."

Argentina is not considered one of the favorites, but they certainly could go on a run in the knockout stage.

Some have suggested Messi's focus with Barcelona this season has been impacted by the World Cup.

"The truth is I don't think about it much," Messi insisted. "I can't imagine but I know Brazil will be full of Argentines since it’s so close.

"There is the desire to realize the dreams people have."
