Chelsea defeated Liverpool 2-0 in a match that would have essentially wrapped up the Premier League for Brendan Rodgers' side if they would have picked up the three points.

Just before halftime, Steven Gerrard misplayed an innocent looking pass near the half-way line and then slipped, leaving Demba Ba to have a one-on-one opportunity against Simon Mignolet that he converted to give Chelsea a 1-0 lead.

Liverpool was frantic in the second half but were unable to break through against Chelsea's organized defense. Liverpool lacked any serious threat with the exception of a late strike by Luis Suárez.

Chelsea picked up a second goal in stoppage time when Fernando Torres broke free with all of Liverpool's outfielders forward. After Mignolet came out to challenge, Torres passed the ball off to Willian for the empty netter.

José Mourinho ran down the sideline to the traveling Chelsea supporters, pointing at the club's crest.

Manchester City now controls their own destiny in the Premier League title chase.
