Atletico Madrid has advanced to their second Champions League Final in three seasons, defeating Bayern Munich 2-2 (away goal) on aggregate.

Bayern began the second leg aggressively and broke through in the 30th minute when Xabi Alonso converted a free kick through a hole in the wall and deflection created by Jose Gimenez.

Bayern continued to dominate possession and Gimenez again erred by pulling Javi Martinez down in the penalty area for a penalty kick. But Jan Oblak dove right on the Thomas Muller attempt to keep the tie level at 1-1.

At the start of the second half, Bayern continued to attack in the final third with their central defenders moving up more and more, which allowed Atleti one small opportunity when Fernando Torres linked up with Antoine Griezmann for a breakaway to beat Manuel Neuer one-on-one. This gave Atleti their all-important away goal to give them a two-gal cushion.

In the 74th minute, Robert Lewandowski converted a header right in front of the goal to come within one goal of Atleti.

In the 83rd minute, Atleti could have wrapped up the tie when Javi Martinez brought down Torres right outside of the box but was mistakenly awarded a penalty. Torres was denied by Neuer in nearly the same exact fashion as Oblak’s save against Muller.

Bayern had several more chances, particularly with five minutes of stoppage time but Oblak continued to be outstanding. For Pep Guardiola, he finishes his three seasons with Bayern never even reaching the a Champions League Final despite all of his success domestically.

Atleti will play the winner of Real Madrid and Manchester City on May 28th in Milan.
