The retirement of Alex Ferguson was prompted by the passing of his sister-in-law.

Ferguson surprisingly stepped down as manager of Manchester United in May of 2013 after winning the Premier League.

“I definitely would have carried on,” Ferguson told the Daily Telegraph. “I saw [my wife] was watching television one night, and she looked up at the ceiling. I knew she was isolated. Her and Bridget were twins, you know?”

Ferguson had planned to retire in 2002 but his wife convinced him to continue, but she didn't try to persuade him again in 2013.
