Lionel Messi came off the bench to score yet again Saturday, extending his all-time World Cup record to 19 goals as Argentina defeated Jordan 3-1 to complete a perfect three wins from three in Group J.
Coach Lionel Scaloni made nine changes with Argentina already confirmed as group winners, dropping Messi to the bench. Giovani Lo Celso and Lautaro Martinez gave Argentina control with first-half goals, with Lo Celso curling in a free kick and Martinez converting a penalty after a VAR review. Argentina finished with a 2.13-to-0.76 edge in expected goals.
Mousa Al-Tamari pulled a goal back for Jordan early in the second half, finishing a low cross from Ehsan Haddad. Jordan exited the tournament having scored in all three games of their World Cup debut.
Messi entered as part of a triple substitution and created an early chance with a free kick from range before converting 10 minutes from time, slotting a low shot through the Jordan defense after being fouled near the box. The goal marked Messi's sixth of the tournament and extended his streak of scoring in seven consecutive World Cup matches, putting him two clear of the field in the race for the Golden Boot.
