Erling Haaland's 65th-minute strike gave Manchester City a 2-1 home victory over Arsenal Sunday, trimming the Gunners' Premier League lead to three points with five games remaining. Pep Guardiola's side now hold a game in hand on the table-toppers.
Rayan Cherki opened the scoring with a brilliant solo effort before Kai Havertz leveled just 107 seconds later, charging down a Gianluigi Donnarumma clearance. Haaland settled the contest in the second half for his 23rd league goal of the campaign.
Arsenal came close to salvaging a draw late on. Eberechi Eze and Gabriel each struck the post, and Havertz headed wide from a Leandro Trossard cross in stoppage time.
Arsenal had a 1.93 to 1.55 xG edge over City in the match despite the loss.
"The Premier League starts again, almost," Arteta said. "They have a game in hand, we are three points ahead, five games to play so game on. Everything is still to play for. So we know how much we've won it and we're not going to stop and we're going to go again, that's for sure. Today if they need to be more convinced, I think they are now more convinced. They were talking about it in the dressing room."
City can move to the summit Wednesday if they defeat Burnley at Turf Moor. Arsenal have finished as runners-up in each of the past three seasons.
"Who is top of the league?" Guardiola said after the match. "We are not. In goal difference, they are better. Step by step. But of course, we have hopes and still extend the chance to fight until the end."
Donnarumma recovered from his early error to make a decisive save at 1-1 before his quick throw released Nico O'Reilly, whose run directly set up Haaland's winner. Arteta's decision to start Havertz over Viktor Gyokeres, who has 18 league goals this season, produced Arsenal's equalizer but ultimately could not prevent defeat.
"The best two teams in England, I think it was a good advertisement worldwide," Guardiola said. "Both man-marking, attack, quick, a little more process. Nothing to say. I would be satisfied with a draw or a defeat. When I see what I see in my team, what can I say? I cannot complain at all, I'm so proud because they are top."
City are now -140 favorites to win the Premier League, which is a 58 percent implied probability. Arsenal had nearly a 90 percent implied probability of winning the Premier League prior to their key loss to Bournemouth earlier this month. However, ESPN's Mark Ogden argues that Arsenal remain the favorites due to their more favorable remaining games and that they could win out based on goal differential if they tie on points.
