Coventry City will return to the Premier League for the first time since 2001 after a Bobby Thomas header in the 84th minute secured a 1-1 draw at Blackburn Rovers on Friday, clinching promotion from the Championship with three matches to spare.
Thomas's equalizer came after Ryoya Morishita had given Blackburn the lead, threatening to delay Coventry's historic night in front of more than 7,000 traveling supporters packed into the away end at Ewood Park.
"This is a special night for the football club, which is bigger than all of us," manager Frank Lampard said.
The result ends a 25-year exile from England's top division for the West Midlands club, one of the Premier League's 22 founding members in 1992. Coventry's journey back included a descent to the fourth tier in 2017 and a painful playoff final defeat to Luton in 2023 before Lampard transformed the club this season.
Lampard was quick to credit those who laid the groundwork, particularly his predecessor Mark Robins.
"Credit to everyone involved in those tough years. Mark Robins, of course, he has to have a shout out," Lampard said. "I wanted to do it away from home. The fans that come all the time, away from home — they're really dedicated fans and they're having the night of their lives. It's what we do this job for."
The promotion also marks a return to the Premier League for Lampard himself. The former England international won three league titles as a Chelsea player and last managed in the top flight during a nine-game interim stint at Stamford Bridge in 2023.
Coventry hold an 11-point lead over second-placed Ipswich with five matches remaining and will claim the Championship title with further victories. The club's only major honor remains the 1987 FA Cup.
