Liverpool forward Hugo Ekitike is facing an extended absence after suffering a suspected torn Achilles tendon during Tuesday's Champions League quarter-final second leg against Paris Saint-Germain, sources told The Athletic.
Medical tests conducted Wednesday are expected to confirm the severity of the injury. Sources familiar with the situation, not authorized to speak publicly, indicated the 23-year-old sustained a suspected rupture after being carried off on a stretcher in the first half.
"It doesn't look good," Liverpool head coach Arne Slot said after the match. "It's difficult for me to say how bad. Tomorrow we will investigate this further. Let's see. This season (before tonight) we have played (summer signings) Alex(ander Isak), Florian (Wirtz) and Hugo together for just 88 minutes. We got another 27 minutes tonight. I will be surprised if there are any more minutes this season."
The projected recovery timeline would rule Ekitike out of this summer's World Cup in the United States, Canada and Mexico, and potentially deep into next season. The France international holds eight caps and had been expected to feature in Didier Deschamps' squad.
Ekitike's club and international teammate Ibrahima Konate told Amazon Prime: "To be fair I think it's bad. I heard many things. I have no words to talk about that. With the World Cup coming up this summer it's very hard for him at this moment and I send him my prayers and everything."
The striker joined Liverpool from Eintracht Frankfurt last summer, previously having been with PSG. He has recorded 17 goals across 45 appearances this season, leading Liverpool in the category and their only player in double figures in Premier League goals.
Liverpool's attack now faces severe strain. Alexander Isak, recently returning from four months out with a fractured fibula and carrying a $125 million price tag, managed just five touches before being substituted at halftime against PSG. He has scored three goals across 19 appearances since arriving from Newcastle United.
With Mohamed Salah departing and Federico Chiesa also expected to leave, Liverpool's need for attacking reinforcements this summer has grown substantially.
