Manchester City secured a dramatic 2-1 victory at Anfield, reducing Arsenal's advantage at the Premier League summit to six points. Bernardo Silva's late equalizer and Erling Haaland's stoppage-time penalty overturned Dominik Szoboszlai's spectacular free-kick opener for Liverpool.
The match concluded amid controversy when Szoboszlai received a red card following a VAR review. Rayan Cherki's potential third goal for City was disallowed after the Hungarian midfielder was penalized for fouling Haaland during a race toward an empty net.
Szoboszlai had given Liverpool the lead with a remarkable long-range free-kick. The goal marked his third set-piece conversion in five matches and ninth overall this season. City's two-man wall proved insufficient to prevent the Hungarian's strike from finding the target.
"Liverpool had the momentum, and after Szoboszlai's free kick, a copy paste of the one against Arsenal, what a strike. What a player," Guardiola told Sky Sports.
The comeback represents a significant psychological boost for City. The club has struggled defensively during second halves throughout the campaign and secured only three league victories at Anfield since 1953. Their ability to withstand sustained pressure could prove crucial in the title race.
Marc Guehi delivered a composed defensive performance despite receiving boos from Liverpool supporters. The center-back faced criticism for rejecting a summer transfer to Anfield but responded with intelligent positioning and key interventions alongside Rodri and goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma.
Liverpool manager Arne Slot expressed frustration with officiating decisions across both meetings between the clubs this season. He questioned the consistency of applying rulebook standards, particularly regarding Guehi's challenge on Mohamed Salah at 0-0.
"Following the rules is all we ask. My main frustration is with the shirt-pull on Salah at 0-0 — he was one v one to the goalkeeper," Slot told reporters.
City face Fulham on Wednesday before Arsenal meet Brentford on Thursday.
