Steven Gerrard and Liverpool have begun formal talks over a new contract.

Gerrard's contract ends after the current season and he's expressed a desire to continue his career even if Liverpool doesn't want him back.

Brendan Rodgers said: “As manager of this club you can’t afford to be sentimental but, both on an off the field, as a leader and as a captain, I want to ensure that Steven is very much part of this second curve we’re on in terms of group development.”

A one-year contract is expected to be offered to Gerrard, who is now 34.
