Liverpool have bought Georginio Wijnaldum from Newcastle for £25 million.

The Holland international is due a medical on Merseyside after an agreement was reached which comprises a guaranteed £23 million payment, plus a £1 million appearance-related add-on and a final £1 million due if Liverpool achieve specified targets.

Wijnaldum has had his heart set on a move to the Premier League following Newcastle’s relegation.

Newcastle’s manager, Rafael Benítez, now hopes to sign the midfielder Lucas Leiva from Liverpool. Benítez brought the Brazilian to Anfield in 2007.

Wijnaldum has been at Newcastle for a year after joining for £14.5 million from PSV Eindhoven last summer.
