Louis van Gaal spent over £150 million on new players this summer, but Pep Guardiola said Manchester United could not afford his Bayern Munich players.

Several of Bayern's key players, including forward Thomas Müller, were reportedly on Van Gaal's original wanted list.

"They [United] don't have enough money," Guardiola told a news conference when asked if Bayern had turned down any Red Devils bids for their players during the summer.

"I saw they spent a lot of money. That's good for my friend Louis. I know all the players the clubs want, but it just depends on the player. If the player wants to stay, they stay.

"Manchester United wanted these kinds of players, but they want to stay and we are happy to be here."
