Gareth Southgate described the lack of English players receiving minutes in the Premier League a "conundrum" needed to be solved.

His statement was in reference to record low number of English players starting for their club team in matchday 14 of the Premier League. Only 54 players eligible for the England national team started matches, down from a record-breaking low set the previous week.

Southgate stopped short of demanding a homegrown player quota, but added "nobody can tell me that, if players are good enough, they will come through. That is not true."
