Following Manchester City's 3-0 loss to Liverpool in the first leg of their Champions League tie, Pep Guardiola was questioned about starting Ilkay Gundogan as an extra midfielder while leaving out Raheem Sterling.

Guardiola had rarely started Gundogan alongside David Silva, Fernandinho and Kevin de Bruyne.

"We wanted more passes, more control," he said. "Gundo is very good arriving in the second line in the boxes. And we wanted to have more control of the midfield players.

"Did it work? We lost 3-0."
