Napoli president Aurelio De Laurentiis has confirmed he did make an enquiry with Paris Saint-Germain about signing Edinson Cavani this summer.

Talks never progressed to Cavani himself as PSG said he was not for sale.

Cavani scored 104 goals in 138 appearances for Napoli.

"I called Jean-Claude Blanc, PSG's general director, to ask whether Edi was for sale," De Laurentiis told Radio Kiss Kiss. "He told me no, and it all stopped there. You know that I'm not generally in favour of players returning, but I really like the way Cavani has kept this bond with this city, it makes me so happy."

De Laurentiis believes his club have performed better than anybody in the summer transfer market, despite selling Gonzalo Higuain to league rivals Juventus.

"Napoli are the club in Europe who have strengthened the most," he said. "The material put at the disposition of [coach Maurizio] Sarri is explosive and it allows us to play in different styles on different fronts.

"We're strong in midfield and we've also invested in defence, where we were already pretty good considering that Chelsea offered over €50 million for one of our players [Kalidou Koulibaly]. Unfortunately there's the African Cup of Nations which pollutes the domestic season so that is why we decided to buy people like [Lorenzo] Tonelli and [Nikola] Maksimovic, who we've been after for at least two years.
